Trump Isn’t Ruling Out Using Economic or Military Coercion to Claim Greenland and Retake the Panama Canal

President-elect Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he would not rule out the possibility of using military or economic coercion to take control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, emphasizing their strategic significance to U.S. national security.

Speaking at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump said that he “cannot assure” that military or economic coercion would not be used to take control of these two strategic locations, in response to a question.

“No, I can’t assure you on either of those two, but I can say this, we need them for economic security,” Trump responded.

“It might be that you’ll have to do something. Look, the Panama Canal is vital to our country. It’s being operated by China. We gave the Panama Canal to Panama. We didn’t give it to China, and they’ve abused it. They’ve abused that gift.”

President Trump said, “They laugh at us because they think we’re stupid, but we’re not stupid anymore. So the Panama Canal is under discussion with them right now."

President Trump also said the United States needs Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, for “national security purposes.”

“People have been talking about it for a long time. You have approximately 45,000 people there,” President Trump said.

“They should give it up, because we need it for national security. That’s for the free world. I’m talking about protecting the free world.

<<>> Besides the 50 United States, what are the alternate political entities that are associated with the U.S.?

Besides the 50 states, several alternate political entities are associated with the United States. These entities have different levels of political autonomy, with some having their own constitutions and local governments, while others depend more heavily on U.S. federal oversight for governance and administration. The relationship between these territories and the U.S. varies, primarily defined by legal frameworks like the Insular Cases for territories and specific Compacts of Free Association for the associated states.

Territories:
The U.S. maintains jurisdiction over several territories, which are not part of any state.

These include:
Puerto Rico - Often referred to as a commonwealth, it has a unique status with significant internal self-governance but is under U.S. sovereignty.

Guam - An organized, unincorporated territory in the Pacific Ocean.

U.S. Virgin Islands - An organized, unincorporated territory in the Caribbean.

American Samoa - An unorganized, unincorporated territory in the South Pacific.

Northern Mariana Islands - An organized, unincorporated commonwealth in political union with the U.S.

Minor Outlying Islands - Various uninhabited islands scattered across the Pacific and Caribbean.

Freely Associated States:
These are sovereign nations in free association with the U.S., meaning they have entered into compacts that give the U.S. certain responsibilities, particularly in defense and economic assistance:

Federated States of Micronesia
Marshall Islands
Palau

Federal District:
Washington, D.C. - Not a state but a federal district where the nation’s capital is located. It has its own local government, but its residents have limited representation in Congress.

Hasn’t Panama broken the agreement with the US over the canal?
If so, the use of force could be justified.

We shouldn’t use force on Greenland. We should just buy them.
Offer the citizens $1 million each if Greenland vote to join the US. 57,000 citizens = $57 billion.

President Trump is just shooting spitballs at China to let them know we’re watching them.

You gotta love it— “We built the damn thing. It’s OURS.” “Canada: Our 51st state!” “Greenland is essential to our national security and world peace, so we can’t take military action to secure it off the table.” “If Hamas doesn’t release the hostages by the time I’m inaugurated, there will be HELL to pay.” “Why is it called the Gulf of Mexico? It should be the Gulf America!” Trump is flat-out amazing. The headlines are his alone, and his message is getting out there. And it’s clear. Quite happy about this. Once again, there is a national leader, and hope for a better future. Beyond price.

“It should be the Gulf America”!

><

All of the countries in North and South America are American countries. I suppose they wouldn’t mind having a Gulf named after them.

The elites can ridicule Trump for wanting to acquire Greenland and reacquire the Panama Canal.

Yet, the world would be a better place if both acquisitions came to be.

It’s not silly talk.

What’s silly talk is complying with a biological male’s desire to be called a woman.

In fact it is far beyond silly, and it’s just plain evil.

The way things are going in Cuba, I bet we could buy it at a fire sale price. Beautiful beaches, warm water, great fishing, fantastic cigars and rum! And no friggin ice or snow! Having suffered under communism for going on 60 years, they would love them some capitalism.

Good point. He’s letting them know he’s serious and means business.

I doubt if we hear much more about an “American Gulf”. But I might be wrong.

Trump is doing what he did so well in his first term - intentionally feeding inflammatory nonsense to the media so they’ll spend all their time decrying how dangerous he is, and pay no attention to what he’s actually doing.

He got a lot of solid conservative policies in place, that way.

Yes true. But no other country’s people in the Americas refer to themselves as Americans. The people of the United States
are the only ones that do that to my knowledge and experience.

I’ve been to maybe 20 or so countries in the Americas and none of those people refer to themselves as americans. In fact nobody in South America refers to themselves as Hispanic either. I’ve only heard that in the USA.

You’re right. He doesn’t give much thought to things he says. The guy is really stupid. A real loser. Here is a perfect example:

Trump: "I'll give you something to snivel about! Hold my beer!"
