Ukraine to end transit of Russian gas into Europe (Midnight tonight, East Coast Time)
BBC News ^ | 31 December 2024 | Laura Gozzi

Posted on 12/31/2024 6:07:55 PM PST by BeauBo

Russian gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine are to end on Wednesday, when a five-year deal between Ukraine's gas transit operator Naftogaz and Russia's Gazprom expires... (had given the EU a year to prepare)...

...The European Commission said the continent's gas system was "resilient and flexible" and that it had sufficient capacity to cope with the end of transit via Ukraine...

...Russia has transported gas to Europe through Ukraine since 1991...

...Once the Ukrainian transit route is cut off, the Black Sea's TurkStream - which reaches Turkey, Hungary and Serbia - will be the only (pipeline) Russian gas supply to European countries...

...Under the EU's contingency plans, affected countries will be supplied with Greek, Turkish and Romanian gas from the Trans-Balkan route, while Norwegian gas will be piped through Poland. More supplies will also reach central Europe through Germany.

The natural gas pipeline (Druzhba) being shut off tonight (at midnight on the American East Coast, 7 AM Kyiv time), was strongly opposed by President Reagan, when it was being built. The Reagan Administration levied sanctions on the pipeline, trying to prevent it from being built - but Europeans provided the technology and components that President Reagan blockaded from America.

With the halting of Russian gas flows through this pipeline tonight, not only will President Reagan's vision finally be fulfilled, but it will also mark another significant reduction on Europe's use of Russian energy (about 1/3 of of the gas that has still been flowing, about 14 bcma, depriving Moscow of another $5-7 Billion per year).

Both NordStream Pipelines, Yamal, and now Druzhba will have ceased flowing from Russia to European customers; marking the end of an era. Only the TurkStream Pipeline (second line, with a max capacity of 15.75 bcma) and LNG tanker shipments remain, both of which are also planned for phase out and replacement.

In 2021, the EU imported 155 BCM of Russian gas, which accounted for about 45% of its total gas imports. In 2025, there will only be operating pipeline capacity to import a maximum of 15.75 BCM (about 10% of the pre-war amount). Europe has been taking a bit more LNG cargoes from Russia in 2024 (equivalent to about 22 BCM), but plans are to phase out Russian LNG in 2025, and all Russian oil, gas and coal by 2027.

The affected EU populations such as the Germans certainly donโ€™t mind the higher home energy costs and the industry bankruptcies associated with the boycott. In fact they enthusiastically welcome it. /sarc

Western Europe can look forward to higher energy prices and everything that comes with that, while Russia will have no problem finding markets for its gas.

As for Reagan, his opposition was based on his determination to face down the communist Soviet Union. The world has changed significantly since then. The Soviet Union disappeared in 1991 and today's collectivists are located in Brussels, London and Washington. Not that this will be of any concern to some Freepers, for whom it will always be 1962.

Yet it is still Moscow that is sending armies to invade other countries.

By the way, the effect on Russia is in the noise as 90% of their pre-war gas deliveries to Europe had already been cut. Based on that, I suspect that the EU is having Ukraine do this to PUNISH Hungary, Slovakia, and Serbia for not taking orders from Brussels on a number of items, including trying to end the Ukraine War, allowing mass migration (re-population), and encouraging the grooming (sexualization) of children.

I suspect these last two items (re-population and grooming) are why the Zeepers are posting this story every several hours.

Is that your litmus test for communism?

Reagan’s policy reminds me of an Ayn Rand interview. You have nothing to do with your enemies. Between the 2 parties we created a monster in China.

Reagan's vision was screw over European nations and saddle them with massive inflation?

This is just another reason why EU leaders that support this pathetic proxy war keep dropping flies.

Actually, as we see, Russia and its friends and allies China, Iran, and North Korea are all expansionists, one has launched the biggest European War since WWII by trying to take its neighbor, the other may try take Taiwan at any time, one is still at a state war because it still wants its neighbor, and Iran is seeing a setback from its recent plans to make a move, they will want North Korea to join their Bricd.

Oh really ?

It's too bad that so many on here are only concerned with the borders of Israel and Ukraine, and never the borders of their own countries !

Fighting communism is not what he is about. That poster is a Ukrainian nationalist that wants to destroy Russia and kill all the Russians. Ethnic hatred is his thing.

Why would they care about our borders? Most of them aren’t Americans. What happens to us is no account beside saving Ukraine.

I’m not American either, but I want the borders of Britain and Canada and the USA to be enforced.

And also to not have them jumped over by millions of “legal” immigrants introduced by a scam process. (which is what happened in Canada, and also to a great extent in Britain)
