WASHINGTON, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Chinese state-sponsored hackers breached the U.S. Treasury Department's computer security guardrails this month and stole documents in what Treasury called a "major incident," according to a letter to lawmakers, opens new tab that Treasury officials provided to Reuters on Monday.
The hackers compromised third-party cybersecurity service provider BeyondTrust and were able to access unclassified documents, the letter said.
According to the letter, hackers "gained access to a key used by the vendor to secure a cloud-based service used to remotely provide technical support for Treasury Departmental Offices (DO) end users. With access to the stolen key, the threat actor was able to override the service’s security, remotely access certain Treasury DO user workstations, and access certain unclassified documents maintained by those users.

In Hollywood movies, the classic hacker move is to sit at a computer somewhere, and type a few lines and then announce, “I’m in!” and then you steal the data that you’re looking for.
In real life, hacking is mostly convincing stupid humans to give you stuff you shouldn’t have or to let you do stuff you shouldn’t do. That’s how you steal the data you’re looking for.
So, I bet this is less “Chinese hackers breaching guardrails” and more “Biden Admin sells stuff”.
It’s more likely that Biden gave them the password (and sent Hunter to deliver it in person).
Or it was a Biden Administration payoff. All those deals Hunter and Biden made to sell his access during VP.
This was NOT an OMG China got it. Someone gave them access and that trail leads right back to Hunter/Jill and Joe Biden.
It is major Treason, yes, Treason with a capital T.
So, the question is...a month from now, six months from now...as the entire banking system is at risk...what becomes the answer? (bit of rhetorical question there).
Just yesterday, Trump was talking about we are headed for a major ‘Depression.” and people laughed, I am not laughing.
Its Just Pres DR Jill completed her treasonous duties to her Boss the CCP before she and those useless deadbeat grandkids are
dragged from the WH .
Seems like the Chinese just sat down and started eating their lunch.
Okayyy...So where’s my check?
“cloud-based”
There’s your problem.
Sorry Chicomms but the USA politicians already stole all the gold
Admin pulled from breaking and front page.
Note to self.
I still think Hillary Clinton’s home email server might have been a way to sell info to the Chinese or others.
Or, in a frenzy of DEI, they just hired straight up Chicom spies to work at Treasury and they passed the passwords on...
Wonder how many more chicom spies the government has hired? We know that congress critters and senators have.
.......this is less “Chinese hackers breaching
guardrails” and more of “Biden Admin sells stuff”.......
Excellent observation.
Is any bitcoin safe?
“In real life, hacking is mostly convincing stupid humans to give you stuff”
I wonder if the people who worry about this are the same ones who use the CCP’s TicToc, or willingly give their financial information ordering stuff from CCP’s Temu.
OK at one time I worked for (unnamed) group and there were obviously phishing emails that came in to me personally with my first and last name which was part of the email address (I assume others too) and no I did not use (unnamed) group computers to access any unsafe sites - 99% of the time to Intranet only for work documentation / instructions / training / reference materials
How the phishing emails came in (very few - probably 5 or so, possibly less) I cannot imagine - though when the job looked to be more temporary than permanent I did make email contact with a recruiter I’d known for some time (and perhaps that exposed the address on their end)
Makes me wonder if some Treasury person clicked on some phishing emails
We were to forward all suspected phishing emails to I/T Security which I did each and every time (with a BCC to myself for proof just in case the Send folder got cleared which often happened)
Amazing isn’t it?
I am more a fan of: if you don’t hold it, you don’t own it
