Ukraine is losing the battle on the ground. Many of its soldiers are tired and exhausted after three years of fighting. The question – can the country endure another year of war?
Their forces are still resisting Russian advances in the east. But they're almost surrounded near the town of Kurakhove – scene to some of the most intense fighting in recent weeks.
The Black Pack, a mortar unit, is trying to prevent their encirclement around Kurakhove. The Russian are closing in on three sides.
We meet the team at a safe house, getting a rest from the fighting. They're not your average soldiers. They include a vegan chef, a mechanic, a web developer and an artist. A group of friends with non-conformist views. Some call themselves anarchists. They all volunteered to fight.
Surt, their 31-year-old commander, joined the army soon after Russia's full scale invasion. He tells me at the start he thought the war would last three years. Now, he says, he's mentally preparing himself for another ten years of fighting.

Laying on thick today! LOL Sounds like Atlantis....did Donovan write that story?
“On board were the twelve
The Poet, the Physician, the Farmer
The Scientist, the Magician
And the other so-called Gods of our legends”
Hail Atlantis! I mean Ukraine....LOL
They volunteered at gunpoint.
Indeed lol!

More likely BBC is trying to identify with the supporters of Zelensky.
As long as the taxpayers furnish the money to bribe the politicians, they can. As long as the taxpayers continue to furnish the money to bribe the politicians they can and will fight to infinity. Of course, later on the United States will have furnish the warm bodied to bleed and die along with the money, but that will be arranged also.
I agree, this piece doesn’t read true. It feels like it was written by purple-haired wokesters. I’m surprised that they didn’t write about two of the soldiers being lovers hoping to adopt a baby after war.
[Can Ukraine face another year of war?]
To the last Ukrainian! /motto of the Biden administration
I’m guessing that would be the vegan chef and the artist. But you never know about these anarchists. Could be the mechanic and the web developer.
Lolol! Great catch! I’ll add the Child Trafficker, the Gay Dancing Grifter, the Foreign Biolab Technician, the Crackhead Son Of an American (P)resident, the Neo-Nazi, the Zeeper!
The demented Biden’s contempt for Americans was never more glaring, as struggling
taxpayers were divested of billions, bundled to con artist Zelensky, and the corrupt Ukraine.
According to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, the wretched Biden State Department spent an additional $4,840,082 tax dollars on “influencers” to promote pro-Ukraine, anti-Russian talking points on social media
The Biden State Dept stupidly spent 5 million more (that they admit to) to influence the corruption.
And no more tax paying good American jobs exporting energy to Europe once the EU globohomos resume their Anti American partnership with Putin’s regime.
It's just a scratch.
Didn’t Zelensky close the border after the war stated to stop men of military age from leaving?
Didn't we tell you?
Not to worry. Georgia is already being teed up as the next in line to give their sons to weaken Russia.
Can Sterling Va. go a year without it?
He thinks Ukraine’s casualties are higher than those officially admitted – more than 400,000 killed and injured. Mobilising more of the population, he believes, wouldn’t solve the problem.
“I just think a lot of the motivated soldiers are either lost or they’re pretty damn exhausted – and so for me it’s not that we want a ceasefire, but we can’t go on for many more years” he says.

I feel sorry for both sides in this war but most sorry for the Ukrainians. The Russian soldiers are ALL volunteers (Russian conscripts are apparently restricted from service outside Russia’s boundaries) albeit enticed by very large payments and benefits. And the Russians’ time in combat is limited by their agreed upon contractual terms of service after which they go home unless they decide to reenlist under a new contract.
The Ukrainians (some remaining volunteers and, increasingly, involuntary conscripts) on the other hand are in FOR THE DURATION with no exit to look forward to except for death or being invalided by non-fatal but disabling injuries. It’s no wonder we read about increasing desertions and unapproved retreats by demoralized Ukrainian forces.
