Immigration Moratorium Now
Townhall ^ | Dec 27, 2024 | Josh Hammer

For the past few days, certain highly visible elements of the MAGA coalition have been sparring with one another. Specifically, X users have been privy to an extensive immigration policy flame war between two competing MAGA coalition camps: the pro-immigration "tech bros," on the one hand, and the nationalist-populist immigration restrictionists, on the other hand. The debate has focused, above all, on the thorny question of so-called high-skill immigration. A Politico headline summarized the dispute as "Elon Musk vs. Stephen Miller."

The "tech bros," led by Musk and his incoming Department of Government Efficiency co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy, have been arguing that we must amend America's already generous and already byzantine immigration laws to permit more "high-skill" foreigners to come work here on H-1B and O-1 visas. This, we are reliably informed, is necessary because there are simply not enough qualified Americans to fill the precious roles in industries such as high tech. The argument has, at times, sounded outright offensive; Ramaswamy, for instance, justified his preference for cheap foreign labor by excoriating American culture itself.

Call it the "America First case for America Last."

The actual "America First" constituency of MAGA -- those representing the men and women who have been sold out by decades of neoliberal failure -- has responded to the avaricious "tech bros" with dismissal and, at times, righteous indignation.

It is certainly salutary that the exciting MAGA coalition is airing out its dirty laundry before Donald Trump resumes power in -- thank God -- three and a half weeks' time. It is even more salutary that the debate is not over the relatively easy issue of illegal immigration but over the more complex issue of legal immigration.

If, as the article claims, 74% of STEM grads have failed to secure jobs in STEM fields while 71% of Silicone Valley jobs have gone to foreigners, it seems Elon and Ramasmarmy need to shut up and hire some American STEM grads.

He’s right, we’re airing the dirty laundry. The left marches in lockstep to destroy America. Still not turning on Trump though. The 1st big fight is deportation, and you can bet the left will use any means to stop it. Then President Trump will have to get really tough. Then, if it settles down, we can go for the much needed reform.

Shut down the colonization of America by India. Why should Americans allow themselves to be colonized and dominated by a foreign power with 4 times the population? The current levels of immigration America is experiencing reminds me of how Europe invaded and dominated China during the Opium Wars of the -9th century. America was in on the action too and some of our leading establishment families like the Forbes made their fortune selling opium to the Chinese and they were worse than the Mexican cartels.

As I have posted before.
Our “Education system” is broken, it is far too concerned with ever higher salaries and perks over actual student education.
This is confirmed, at least locally, by UNR (Reno NV) turning down a generous Apprenticeship Program offered by Bentley Nevada.
It would have cost the school NOTHING but would have allowed participating students to graduate fully up to speed in current tech!
Of course the company was going for meritocracy, not just DEI that was not even a common thing at the time. Did “DEI” play a part in the university refusal? Probably.
Of course the company hoped that those students would come work for them. But that was NOT a requirement, the students could have applied anywhere.
Now after quashing the very sort of industry help our universities should be welcoming, we are to believe it is our STUDENTS who are to blame for the “Need” of H1B hires?

At the next election we must pay more attention to the university systems and their management, he current crop are anti-American to their core.

The damn fools should have just left well enough alone. They know nothing of picking battles. There is plenty of trouble and to do without opening this bucket of sh-t.

Meltdown Musk is feeding a line of BS. 2000 American workers were displaced by Indians. Vp of Cognizant admitted they were not more skilled during a class action lawsuit. They lost the lawsuit. Now it goes to damages phase. I hope they go out of business.

From,

The retarded Right.

The whole scam is getting exposed by the Retarded Right.

Luckily, Cognizant lawsuit verdict happened a few months before this meltdown. We have proof 1000s of workers displaced by indian workers who are no more qualified.

Gazillionaire Musk wants to save a few bucks by hiring indentured servants from India instead of American Citizens.

He has his priorities; they are not America’s.

I really hope 47 figures out a way to make his base (me included) truly happy on immigration.

Immigration must simply CEASE in the west. Go to WAR on this...for our survival!

This is much more important than WW2 for us. Hitler didn’t threaten our survival but the invasion IS.

Just because you're a STEM grad doesn't mean you're smart.

Anymore than just because some body shop pimps you out to US business means you are actually any better qualified.

This is where the rubber meets the road.

On one hand we have the voters who put DJT over the top who want H1B to end now as they are the ones who lost jobs to legal and illegal immigrants. And this is where we as freepers are.

OTOH we have the Silicon Valley tech bros who financed DJT campaign and now expect payback. And the farmers and hotel owners (hello Trump!) who benefit from cheap illegals. They save billions in wages by hiring H1B and/or illegals. Musk is their front man.

Who do you think will prevail? Go ahead get angry now.

You already have a commitment to enforce the border, build the wall, and deport illegals, with a scary guy appointed to do it.

It seems to me that everything is looking up on that front, which, note, is a matter of @5 million a year. Now, you are quibbling over another stream of under 100,000 a year.

I suggest you all make a deal with Musk & Co.

“Just because you’re a STEM grad doesn’t mean you’re smart.”

Or have any work ethics. Work ethics are a HUGE problem. The current workforce thinks work should cater to their lifestyle rather than change their lifestyle around work. They are arrogant and feel they are privileged, they think the world “owes” them a living just because they exist. Just getting them to show up for work is a HUGE problem let alone do anything productive while they are at work.

Of course we can blame the left indoctrination and wokeness for this, but the problem still remains. Every business creates secondary jobs and benefits to the economy. And if they can’t even get anyone to show up to work what are their options? Their only options are to shut down or move out of the United States where they CAN get a reliable workforce. Both equate to a whole chain of not just primary but also secondary jobs lost.

So the only question is do we want to keep these businesses alive and in the States or not? Because if they are forced to rely on our useless workforce alone they just can’t. Ironic that California is an example of this reality. Businesses are shutting down or moving out left and right because of minimum wage and worker rights laws. It is destroying their economy. Do we actually want the same for our whole country?

California’s example problem is extremism with zero compromise. Just like right now over this legal Visa issue. It is a situation that truly does need some very critical thought. If we had a reliable workforce it would be different, but we do not. Unfortunately we are in a do or die situation that only a compromise can cure if we want to keep the secondary employment and improve the economy in the bigger picture overall.

Last thing we want to do is destroy all those secondary positions. It would be self destructive and exactly what the left would love to see happen because of extremist conservative efforts. We are right now falling into a trap over this issue that the left set up.

Mexico tests cellphone app allowing migrants to send alert if they are about to be detained in US

Story by Associated Press, Updated: 3:17 PM EST, Fri, Dec 27, 2024

Mexico is developing a cellphone app that will allow migrants to warn relatives and local consulates if they think they are about to be detained by the U.S. immigration department, a senior official said Friday.

The move is in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s threats to carry out mass deportations after he takes office on Jan. 20.

The app has been rolled out for small-scale testing and “appears to be working very well,” said Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Mexico’s secretary of foreign affairs.

He said the app would allow users to press a tab that would send an alert notification to previously chosen relatives and the nearest Mexican consulate. De la Fuente described it as a sort of panic button.

“In case you find yourself in a situation where detention is imminent, you push the alert button, and that sends a signal to the nearest consulate,” he said.

U.S. authorities are obliged to give notice to home-country consulates when a foreign citizen is detained. Mexico says it has beefed up consular staff and legal aid to help migrants in the legal process related to deportation.

De la Fuente expects the app to be rolled out in January. He didn’t say whether the app has a de-activation tab that would allow someone to rescind an alert if they weren’t really detained.

The government says it has also set up a call center staffed 24 hours a day to answer migrants’ questions.

The Mexican government estimates there are 11.5 million migrants with some form of legal residency in the United States, and 4.8 million without legal residency or proper documents.

Mr. Hammer is totally correct. At least a 5 year moratorium on ALL immigration is needed. During which we take stock of the reality of the damage done, and how it was done.

I do not believe that the problems that we currently face as a nation cannot be solved by its own citizens. I do not believe that “tech grads” from India, China, or anywhere else are de facto superior to our own graduates. Nothing about the governments, cultures, or education of either India or China, to my knowledge, tells me that they understand “merit” better than We the People do. I do not believe we are really getting their best; exceptions proving the rule aside.

Americans can learn and Americans can do. We can draw upon the stock we have and we can improve. We must! We have seen what illegal and abuse of legal immigration has done to us. Are we so far gone? Are we beyond helping ourselves? I don’t think so. And I frankly don’t trust an H-1B from the other side of the of globe, whose only culture, government, and ethic they know is their own, to teach us about “merit” and “hard work” the way We the People already understand it.

That’s the best I can put it.
