Judge Delays Trump Assassination Attempt Trial to September 2025

Ryan Routh previously requested delaying the trial until at least December of 2025.

Florida Judge Aileen Cannon has delayed trial for Ryan Routh, the man suspected of attempting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, from February to September of 2025.

In an order issued on Dec. 23, Cannon cited “substantial discovery” or the amount of evidence to review before trial.

Her order sets up a series of pre-trial deadlines, leading to a two-week trial period beginning on Sept. 8.

Routh, 58, has been charged with attempted assassination, along with other counts such as assaulting a Secret Service agent. He faced potential life imprisonment, the Department of Justice said in a statement.

The defense, during a pre-trial hearing on Dec. 11, requested a delay and signaled that Routh might bring an insanity defense.

Cannon’s order set a deadline of Feb. 3 for any notice of such a defense, as well as notice of expert evidence of a mental condition and motion for mental competency.

“Although discovery is substantial due largely to the high number of electronic devices seized in this case [many from Defendant himself], the schedule afforded below more than accounts for review of such devices and of discovery in general,” Cannon said.

Her order noted that the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a discovery response on Dec. 20, “transmitting what appears to be all of the outstanding discovery ... including body-worn camera footage, recent interviews, and additional jail communications.”

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida argued that was excessive and noted that many of the devices subject to discovery were Routh’s own.

Of the 18 cellphones the defense highlighted in their motion to delay, 17 belonged to the defendant, U.S. Attorney John Shipley said in a filing to the court on Dec. 10.

I take this as good news should that demon in the WH try and disrupt his prosecution.

too much evidence is the reason for delay.

So long as Rough remains locked up, it should work out.
He should not be made available for casual interviews with the press, though. This is Prison, not Summer Camp.

I’d be surprised if Biden’s administration doused pardon him.

Am I the only one who thinks that “the right to a speedy trial” is absurdly quoted by whiny hypocrites?

Such as when defense attorneys want to keep full investigations from taking place so they rush the start.

But 99% of them DELAY to AVOID a speedy trial. They do everything they can to delay and when convicted they delay the death penalty for decades to make a mockery of it. And now the killers can wait for a new Biden to wipe the penalty away, rubbing that in the faces of the victims’ families and the good people (me).

As others have said about the “drone” situation, we know nothing substation about them or about either of the full backgrounds and motivations and associates of the two attempted assassins. A mystery all this time later.

Who was one talking to on the cell phone?
Who helped set up the planned getaway and transportation and gave knowledge of the positions of the President at various times (as the golf course hole and a good place to wait unseen or the roof where the other shooter could watch and take aim). All “acted alone” like 1963?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedy_trial

In criminal law, the right to a speedy trial is a human right under which it is asserted that a government prosecutor may not delay the trial of a criminal suspect arbitrarily and indefinitely. Otherwise, the power to impose such delays would effectively allow prosecutors to send anyone to jail for an arbitrary length of time without trial, expressed as the maxim Justice delayed is justice denied.

the prosecutor cannot delay, the defense can?
Didn’t know that.
