After Dhaka, Comilla and Chittagong, rabid jihadists have again attacked minorities in Bangladesh, this time in Sylhet, and under the centuries-old, tried and tested pretext of “blasphemy.” The rise of social media has made the job of these religious fanatics even easier, as they have to put little imagination or effort into making up a marketable story. They just allege that someone belonging to a non-Muslim community has made a random Facebook post, and within seconds, they assemble into crowds of hundreds and charge through non-Muslim areas, destroying everything that gets in their way.
On Wednesday, December 4, such a fanatic mob ran riot through Hindu-owned homes and businesses in the Dowarabazar area of Sunamganj in Bangladesh’s Sylhet. The unrest started at sundown, gathered momentum through the night, and continued until past midnight, leading to significant damage to Hindu-owned property. An allegedly offensive Facebook post again triggered the attack on the Hindu minorities. It has been reported that the Muslims had gathered to hold a procession in order to protest a post that a Hindu boy made, and that the Muslims deemed offensive. However, as we have seen throughout history, such protests are never peaceful. All too many Muslims are oblivious to or contemptuous of the concept of finding a solution through dialogue, and are always prepared to take to the streets with their rustic weapons and draw the blood of their non-Muslim, weak, defenseless opponents.
We have no details on what was the content of the post that triggered a swarm of Muslims to rum amok through Hindu areas, except that it was an image of some kind. We don’t even know if there is any veracity in the claim that a Hindu youth had made an offensive post.
We have frequently observed in the past how violent Muslim mobs have acted on mere rumors, looting and causing bloodshed, and investigations after the destruction proved that no Hindu had done anything to trigger such reactions. This time, too, a mere buzz about an alleged offensive post drove gangs of irate Muslims to embark upon their occasionally violent spree. The attackers wrecked and robbed dozens of homes and shops. Several gold stores owned by the Hindus were also burgled. The mob ransacked the local Loknath Temple, and valuables worth over 1,500,000 Bangladeshi taka ($12,500) were stolen. According to reports, at least 30 residential properties and more than 100 shops were destroyed in these attacks. The Muslims also targeted the house of Gaur Das, an eminent leader of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, and his family temple was torn down, also.
And yet there was no action from the Bangladeshi authorities against the rioters. Not that they are sitting idle. The Officer-in-Charge at the Dowarabazar police station, Zahidul Haque, confirms that a 21-year-old Hindu youth, Akash Das, has been detained for posting an image on social media that offended collective Muslim sentiments. The boy was presented in court and accused of hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims. The court denied him bail and sent him to jail.
Now, what about the hurt sentiments of the Hindus whose homes were torn down and temples vandalized and looted?
As usual, Bangladeshi authorities found no foul play there, and it goes without saying that no action was taken against any of the rioters. Although Khokan Roy, general secretary of the temple in Sunamganj, confirmed that valuables worth 1,500,000 Bangladeshi taka were stolen, and the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council condemned the attack on the minorities, the Yunus government’s police found no evidence of violence and riots. OC Zahidul said police had not received any reports of vandalism or attacks in the area due to the incident. “The village is remote, and most houses are dilapidated, with no concrete buildings.” Deputy Commissioner Md Ilias Mia only hinted at possible premeditation behind the attack, and attempted to downplay its virulence by suggesting that the scale of the damage was likely exaggerated.

Facebook should be torn apart and scattered to the winds. You can’t advocate for a Presidential candidate in the US, but you can organize religiously fanatical mobs of people to destroy.
When they act like this, you shoot them. Full stop.

YAY social media! Even in far parts of the world, it’s a curse. There will be posts here praising social media - only have it to keep in touch with lost friends, family members etc.
If there wasn’t social media in the US, what would the news have to report? So and So did such and such and said such and such. As some TV commentators are fond of saying: Watch this!
What would the internet have to post? Just think - kids and even adults wouldn’t be able to cause trouble, film it, post it on You Tube and sit back and take pride in their newfound celebrity!
This is a very sad article and those in power will hop on social media to proclaim “it can never be allowed to happen again”.

Glad to meet someone who agrees with me on not just FB but all social media. I have friends who can’t even talk for themselves anymore - it’s always what someone said on FB and it’s like they’re taken over by another entity...they’re not speaking for themselves but what someone else said. And we thought the education system was bad BEFORE social media!!!
Don’t get me started on smart phones - one in the hand all waking hours. TRY to have a conversation on any subject and it’s peck, peck, peck on the phone to come up with something that shoots down or verifies what someone is saying. May as well give up trying to talk to someone.
I didn’t have anything to do with the TV commercial putting all devices in a basket at the dinner table but it’s a darn good idea!
