Johnson drops Trump’s debt limit demand in last-ditch effort to avoid shutdown

House Republicans are planning to move forward with a last-ditch effort to avoid a government shutdown by voting on Friday afternoon to extend current government funding levels until mid-March, dropping a demand from President-elect Donald Trump to attach a debt limit increase to the spending package.

The House will vote on a clean continuing resolution to maintain current spending levels until March 14 combined with $110.4 billion in disaster aid and economic assistance for farmers, according to lawmakers familiar with the plans. The spending package is the same bill that was shot down by the House on Thursday but excludes the debt limit provision opposed by GOP deficit hawks.

The package will come to the floor under suspension of rules, meaning it will require a two-thirds majority to pass. As a result, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will need to rely on a significant number of Democrats to help push it across the finish line — something Democratic leaders have said they will not do.

If that vote fails, GOP leaders could move forward with another proposal to advance separate single-subject bills, dividing the CR proposal into three components: the clean CR, disaster aid standalone, and an economic package for farmers.

Those three bills would likely be advanced by the Rules Committee, which would mean they’d only require a simple majority to pass on the floor — increasing Johnson’s chances of success. However, if the bill is pushed through the committee, lawmakers would not be able to vote on final passage until Saturday morning due to House procedures.

That means the government is likely to enter a temporary shutdown, although lawmakers say the weekend offers some cover for those who...

Johnson must lose his speaker seat if this passes. To handcuff Donald Trump, even if for two months, is BS.

Of course if the rats vote against it, Johnson will look like a hero as they are the ones to blame for the gov shutdown.

Interesting watching Johnson trying to balance between passing things, which he feels is his job, and making Trump happy. I keep remembering Johnson’s face as he walked into Madison Square Garden with Trump amid the deafening crowd cheering. He’s not going to have an easy time of it for the next couple years. But I’ll bet Trump stays with Johnson as long as he sees Johnson TRYING to do what he’s asked.

A debt limit increase does not cut spending.

This Congress has been weaponized. The federal government is far too powerful. It acts against the American people. It cares not how they voted. It is completely dysfunctional, and it is owned by the left. In case you hadn’t noticed, they aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon.

Turncoat Johnson should loose more than his seat if this passes.

His reputation, at least what’s left of it. And maybe he’ll be voted out of office next election. One can only hope.

Why wasn’t this “Plan A”? And since it wasn’t “Plan A”, why wasn’t it “Plan B”?

To keep Schumer from creating a debt ceiling crisis before the 2026 mid-term elections.

Even from the minority, Democrats would be able to block regular order separate budget bills until the debt ceiling approaches, which would then force a CR bill through the reconciliation process, just like he does today.

President Trump wants to take that tactic off the table until after the mid-term elections are done with. Maybe he's thinking that Republicans can create a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate in 2026?

I will bet whatever bill these SOB’s pass will include $$ for Ukraine. This is a Democrat House. Never has been and never will be a Republican House.

“To handcuff Donald Trump”

Give Congress further license to be profligate and expect dollars to be squandered.

The dollar is headed down Old Argentine Peso Way.

Every debt ceiling increase of $1 trillion should come with an income tax increase of 1% except on the lowest bracket, plus a one-year bracket threshold freeze.

What did Minneapolis do when it was flush with federal Covid money? Paid $27 million to the Floyd family.

Because of DC accounting.

To get through his tax cuts, which DC considers “spending”, since you’re taking $$ away from govt/ them.

Any spending Briben has done since June 2023 also goes toward existing debt ceiling.

This tweet explains it well … h/t Lakeside Granny …
