Syrian mass grave is largest uncovered since Stalin era as 100,000 bodies were discarded outside Damascus: advocacy group

A mass grave containing the bodies of at least 100,000 people tortured and killed under the brutal dictatorship of ousted President Bashar al-Assad was discovered outside Damascus, according to the head of a US-based Syrian advocacy group — who said the corpses were squished by bulldozers to “fit them in.”

Mouaz Moustafa, the executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), said the regime’s victims were found in al-Qutayfah, about 25 miles north of the capital.

...

“One hundred thousand is the most conservative estimate,” Moustafa told Reuters of the amount of bodies he believed were dumped at the chilling site. “It’s a very, very extremely, almost unfairly conservative estimate.”

Moustafa also warned that it was just one of eight mass graves created by Assad’s fallen government.

...

The mass grave identified at al-Qutayfah is littered with multiple trenches estimated to be about 19 to 23 feet deep and more than 10 feet wide.

...

bulldozer drivers who were ordered by the regime to squish “the bodies down to fit them in” the holes.

The grim discovery is believed to be one of the largest mass graves in modern history.

A Stalin-era mass grave in Ukraine — located at Bykivnia, a forest outside the capital Kyiv — is estimated to be the burial site of more than 200,000 executed political prisoners

Which liberals may not class as genocide, unless they can blame Israel for it.

This monster also used chemical weapons

He killed 300,000 of his own citizens - making him already the worst mass-murderer of this century

And yet, even with all this well-known, SOME here on FR actually defended him as “a nice guy” ... disgusting

No he’s NO nice guy.

And if he was secular in the way that he didn’t wish the US or Israel harm, that would be SOME KIND of benefit.

But he wasn’t even that. He put money towards hurting our men in Iraq and elsewhere.

But yeah, I’m concerned if extremist muslims (redundant) take over.

That could be worse for a lot of people...they can kill this many people without losing sleep.

Replacing him with Al Qaeda and Isis is no improvement.

Speaking of Stalin, never forget that FDR had us allied to Stalin.

And never forget that The NY Times lied about the Soviet’s mass murders during the Holodomor.

These mass graves always make big headlines then disappear when they aren’t true. Didn’t we bomb Serbia over “mass graves” then said never mind?

I don't think anyone claimed that he was a "nice guy". We recognized that he's a secular tyrant who protected religious minorities in Syria. Similar to Muammar Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein.

So now it's appears that Assad is replaced by an ISIS type government.

This sounds like a story from decades ago about Assad’s father. Wonder if it is the same incident?

Muslims killed 500000 of their Muslim “brothers” during the Syrian war circa 2015. Large parts of Syria were bombed to smithereens, meaning demolished housing stock.

No one cared, no mass protests because —— “No Jews = No news”

That’s a pretty substantial hole/excavation, how can we NOT see that in sat photos or recon overflights?

No one who rises to the level of head of state is a “nice guy”. So, no....Assad is not a nice guy.

The U.S. and Israel funded and trained the people who started the color revolution in 2011 which lead to the civil war. The civil war lead to the death of the 300,000 Syrians (and the invasion of Europe by the 3rd world hordes).

I’m curious if you would accuse Abraham Lincoln of being a “mass murderer who killed 500,000 of his own citizens”?

It is crazy to me how people on FR can criticize Obama or McCain or Grahamnasty for wanting to fund and train the ISIS/Al Queda rebels but if you accuse Israel of doing it, it is a blood libel.

You people are seriously brainwashed.

I wonder how much involvement there was of Russian “advisors” and “trainers”, in designing and implementing such Stalinist programs.

The U.S. and Israel

Oh stop it, Assad is a thug dictator ... stop apologizing for him

He alone is responsible

Nobody put a gun to his head and forced him to kill 300,000 of his own citizens, HE made that choice himself

HE allowed the torture, the secret police, the jailing of women, children, and toddlers even ...

And yet YOU blame America and Israel ... unbelievable

You're sick

It is very common for crazy, made up stories to be used to legitimize military and political action. Many of the stories you have been told fit into this category. Look up Gell Mann amnesia. You have it. How could you have lived through COVID, Trump, Ukraine, etc and still believe what you see on the news?

Regarding the deaths (which did happen), they occurred after we started a revolution in their country. Someone DID put a gun to his head. We did.

What did you expect him to do when we funded and trained ISIS rebels to overthrow him? Should he have just packed up his stuff and left because the International Order decided to vote him off the island?

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Until victory. Then they are our enemy again.

As A Turkish General said to an American General years ago...
American General:”We and the Turks are friends!”
Turkish General:”WE ARE NOT FRIENDS! We just happen to have the same enemies!”

***A mass grave containing the bodies of at least 100,000 people tortured and killed***

Still short of what Pol Pot did in Cambodia in the 1970s. I still remember US college students having a candle light parade celebrating the takeover of Cambodia by the Commies.

As Stalin once said...”One death is a tragedy. A Million is a statistic.”
