House Fails To Pass Trump-Backed Spending Deal In First Go
The Daily Wire ^ | Dec 19, 2024 | Daniel Chaitin

The Republican-controlled House rejected on Thursday evening a revamped spending bill that would stave off a federal government shutdown by the end of the week, leaving the ultimate fate of the measure backed by President-elect Donald Trump and his close allies in doubt.

Just hours after the new deal was unveiled, 172 Republicans and two Democrats voted for the bill. It failed to pass under suspension of the rules, meaning the bill needed a two-thirds majority for it to succeed. Another 38 Republicans voted against the bill, siding with the majority of Democrats.

The Hill’s Emily Brooks reported that Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) said the bill would not go to the Rules Committee, a move that would pave the way to a vote requiring only a simple majority for success, but stressed the legislation is not “dead” as members would “continue having talks.”

As evidenced by a tense debate on the House floor, at least some of the Republican opposition to the spending legislation rests with how the bill will extend a suspension of the debt ceiling for another two years beyond January of next year, when the current suspension is slated to expire.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) pushed back on the criticism, saying...

And so begins the war between Trump and what is theoretically his own party (but in reality isn’t).

Predictably, they ran out there to pass Joe Biden’s Trillion dollar Spending Bills, over and over, and now they’re suddenly fiscal hawks.

They did this in Trump’s first term.

I will never forget El Rush-Bo talking about the “poor Christmas Sleigh Driver” during a so-called ‘shutdown.’**

The sleigh driver was the epitome of nonessential personnel, but the Drive-By Media were harping on him not working.

**shutdown - turns out over 80% of the bloated Federal Government workers are classified as essential. AND, the DemocRATS always harp on defaulting our debt payments without a budget and/or continuing resolution. Enough $$$$ comes into the Federal Coffers every month to service the debt. Just no new spending, which the democRATS and RINOs cannot stand.

The House is about as “Republican” as the Texas House has been over the past 15 years. Run by Democrats, with a RINO puppet “in charge.”

Some of them WERE primaried, and lost, but more are retiring RINOs who hate Trump and are more that happy to screw him on their way out.

The new House will be more conservative, but with a far smaller majority. Trump will not get a damn thing done. If he wants to extend his tax cuts beyond Dec 2025, he will have to offer a shitload of pork to Rats.

His focus should be on Executive Orders and Executive agency actions.

You’d be primaring the most conservative members of Congress. I guess it’s idolatry over principle.

Trump is playing the game.

He knew the bill needed Democrats which he was never going to get.

Republicans may have voted against it but the vote was just a vote for the record as they knew they could never get enough Democrats to pass it.

Trump was backing something he knew wouldn’t pass so he can claim he wasn’t an obstructionist.

There is going to be a shutdown in some form and there will be finger pointing.

But there is only one SOLUTION.

Shut down the gubmint.

The time is right as we presently do not have a functioning President or Vice-President representing the executive branch.

It’s really brilliant.

Play hardball and do the heavy lifting before the term even begins.

This isn’t rocket science.

It is about the exercise of POWER, and a test of wills.

The press can blame Trump all they want, but Joey is still POTUS even if in name only.

Take the time to do it right which is a bill of very few pages that can be read in a few minutes and the bill follows rules so that it doesn’t need a 2/3 vote.

But it will be a test.

ALL so-called Republicans votes will be required to get it passed.

The Democrats mastered the STRICTLY party line vote when they held slim margins.

It’s time for this so-called opposition party to drop the pretense and show it can be an opposition party under the STRONG leadership of President Trump.

Correct. It’s a big lie. The government “shut down” numerous times during Reagan’s first term yet he got reelected. Stop spending, stop baseline budgeting, abolish worthless agencies and stop this never ending deficit spending. Only the government can operate this way. Any entity in the private sector would be bankrupt. Millei in Argentina did this in less than a year, have the BALLS to do it here.
