President-elect Donald Trump provided a path on Thursday for House Speaker Mike Johnson to save his job as Speaker in the next Congress.
Johnson’s Speakership is in jeopardy after he tried to rush a spending measure packed full of pork, which drew ire from Trump and Elon Musk, the president-elect’s designated chief of axing government waste.
Trump’s roadmap for Johnson appears to set a series of reasonable demands, although achieving Trump’s requests might be difficult in the context of a potential government shutdown before Christmas.
Johnson will “easily remain speaker” if he “acts decisively and tough” and eliminates “all of the traps being set by Democrats” in the spending package, Trump told Fox News’s Brooke Singman. “Anybody that supports a bill that doesn’t take care of the Democrat quicksand known as the debt ceiling should be primaried and disposed of as quickly as possible,” he said.
“If the speaker acts decisively, and tough, and gets rid of all of the traps being set by the Democrats, which will economically and, in other ways, destroy our country, he will easily remain speaker,” Trump added.

He’s TOAST, Jim!..................
Johnson is simply too weak to be Speaker, and Trump knows it. This funding debacle was a total disgrace.
the American people just voted no on business as usual
My gut says that Johnson would prefer to be on the side of Team Trump, but he’ll need get it together and pass a clean, simple bill.
He tried to rush the pork filled bs bill thru which is the exact opposite of what Trump has in mind for Americas future. The guy is a weak kneed hack and Trump will not have it
Johnson “polly pockets” to the trash bin
If not, his days in the skybox with the boys is history.
Johnson makes McCarthy look good. to put that bill out - so anti-America First and such a cave to Ds - rather than fighting the fight the voters want - so off the reservation!
yep
Did he whip a clean CR? Not have the votes? They haven’t had a pay raise in 15 years but transparency ahead of the bill might have helped.
"Primaried and disposed of as quickly as possible" = purging a half a dozen more RINOs in the 2026 election.
I know this is Trump talking through his hat, but spending the next two years leading a factional fight in the Republican caucus while the House runs through three Speakers a year is not useful.
Trump needs to get together with Johnson and Thune and settle on a plan. Bickering in public will ensure that nothing gets done for two years, and probably four after democrats retake Congress, the Republicans having folded on all the big talk. But the blowhards will fill the time posturing on tv. Republicans need to demonstrate that they can govern. Public sandbox tantrums won't do it.
And yet somehow most of them leave office as bajillionairs.
Cry me a river...
If you want something done you can’t take your ball and go home. If we had Republicans not so set on voting no on everything we could get a clean CR. But Democrats are needed to pass anything at all.
They haven’t had a pay raise in 15 years
...............................
They don’t deserve one.
Johnson is NO leader.
But he is unfortunately representative of his caucus.
He is a go along to get along guy put in charge of a whole bunch of go along to get along guys who have no higher objective than to acquire office and then just do whatever it takes to hold on to that office.
Weak willed people pleasing weasels who have sold the public interest for the sole benefit of their self-interest.
Trump has made it clear, serve the folk who elected you, because if you don’t names will be taken and there will be consequences.
Done.
Trump is so much smarter than the rest of them.
I don’t recall reading that a clean CR was whipped.
If Johnson tries to put together a "clean, simple bill," Dems and RINOs will say
