Outgoing President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of 1,500 people and pardoning 39 others in the biggest ever single-day act of clemency in the US.
The names of the people involved have not been given but the pardons are for those convicted of non-violent crimes.
The commutations on Thursday were announced for those who were placed on home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Biden said these people would have received shorter sentences if charged under today's laws, policies, and practices.
The pardons come over a week after the president was criticized for pardoning his own son Hunter from his federal crimes.
Officials said last week that the White House was listening to demands for Biden to extend the same grace to thousands of people wronged by the U.S. judicial system.
Sources had told Reuters last week that the pardons that were being discussed were said to include those convicted of nonviolent drug offenses and people identified by civil rights groups as unjustly incarcerated.
Biden said he would be taking more steps in the weeks ahead and would continue to review clemency petitions.
The second largest single-day act of clemency was by Barack Obama, with 330, shortly before leaving office in 2017.

Looks like those running things have decided to have Biden create a distraction to take the focus off the disastrous Hunter pardon.
Oh boy, this just gets better every single day. Rushes convictions of Jan. 6 accused who did very little wrong and LETS OUT REAL CRIMINALS INCLUDING HIS SON. I pray for this nation to really come to repentance that God may save us from these people.

I am very cynical and yet even I am blown away at the depth of the corruption and rot that permiates our government.
It is not just people in government, it is the people as well and Trump cannot solve that as the people is where people in the Government come from.

Did Biden physically sign EACH each of those pardons. If not, then there’s a case to be made that they don’t exist.

I'd probably support many of the commutes, but I'd be very skeptical of those identified by "civil rights groups".
Originally they inauguration was in April, I think but they moved it up to January in the 20th century once travel was better and faster and the US had more dynamic needs. As I watch Biden abuse power for months I’m starting to think maybe once the election is over the outgoing pres should get one week to pack and get out.

What boggles my mind is that he’s not even a legitimate POTUS. He’s an impostor who was corruptly installed by a corrupt cabal. Wonder how much they each had to pay to the Biden Crime Family to get pardoned or any other action. Biden does NOTHING for FREE.
