Sir Keir Starmer has told the new leaders of Syria that they must renounce terrorism and violence following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Speaking as he arrived in the Gulf for trade talks, the Prime Minister said it was “very early days” when asked whether his Government would engage with the Syrian rebel group that has overthrown Assad.
He welcomed the fall of Assad’s “barbaric regime”, and said: “We do need a political solution, and that’s what we are talking to regional allies about. It is a good thing that Assad has gone, a very good thing for the Syrian people.
“What we must also ensure is the rejection of terrorism and violence, and that civilians are protected, minorities are protected, and that can only be through a political process.”
Joe Biden, the US president, also shared concerns about Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the rebel group taking over Syria, warning that they “have their own grim record of terrorism and human right abuses”.
Sir Keir’s comments came as he arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday for trade talks with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, its president, before flying on to Saudi Arabia for his first face-to-face meeting with Mohammed bin Salman, its leader, on Monday.
Sir Keir will also discuss how stability and security can be maintained in the region with the two countries’ leaders.
“The Syrian people have suffered under Assad’s barbaric regime for too long, and we welcome his departure. Our focus is now on ensuring a political solution prevails, and peace and stability is restored,” he said.

Stiffly worded letter to follow no doubt
The Two-Tier Clown puts on his red rubber nose.
In bookstores is a very expensive, beautifully bound in green leather Holy Koran. If one was going to give a gift to someone, like a president, a senator, a Pope or any other high "ranking" person in society, it is what you would buy.
Every page was in Arabic on the left side, and English on the right. The English side was just like the other modern ones sold in the USA, all the "bad" stuff left out so one would think it is a "religion of peace".
I have a non Muslim friend who is fluent in spoken and read Arabic. I asked him to come to the bookstore with me, because I was too cheap to buy the book.
I pointed out the sura I mentioned, and a few others, plus there were some he was familiar with he wanted to check. (he had spent quite a few years in Saudi-Arabia as a civilian). I have never seen the expression that came on his face before. Absolute shock.
He had only seen true versions before too. He said, "My God, they are two different books". I remember those exact words. I don't remember the rest of his comments word for word, but he went on to say, that this explains why so many people in our government have the wrong idea about Islam.
Every non Muslim (infidel) needs to read a true translation of the Holy Koran. Then they might understand why this is happening and why it will never stop happening.
Western leaders make the mistake of thinking everyone else in the world thinks the way we do and is motivated by the same things.
Most Muslims in particular, don't and aren't.
IMHO these are probably the most accurate translations, and they are FREE.
As we all know, “Sternly Worded Memos” are SO effective!
LOL
“Starmer tells new Syrian leaders to renounce terror and violence”
As my grandma (PBUH) would have said, “That and a nickel will get you on the subway”.
Sir Keir.
What a retard
Is he trying to make them laugh themselves to death?
Bkmrk
Sure, that’ll work..
Is he stupid, or what?
Yeah, they’ll get right on that. /s
“OK Mr. Starmer, right away sir.”
I’m sure the jihadists are shaking in their boots over Starmer’s warning.
Its weird how almost everything DC and the US deep-state do overseas ends up insulting, harassing or killing Christians.
I say chaps. A bit of good form is in order. Fancy a cucumber sarnie?
The nasty people are always the ones who step in to fill a power vacuum.
