Paapa Essiedu is being eyed for the role of Professor Severus Snape in the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series, Variety has confirmed with sources.
According to sources, no deal is currently in place and Essiedu has not formally accepted the role. He is the latest actor to be mentioned for a role in the series. Variety previously reported that Academy Award winner Mark Rylance was in the running for the role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
Variety has reached out to HBO and Warner Bros. for comment and will update this story should they respond.

This is a clever way to avoid negative comparisons with Alan Rickman who was a consummate actor that totally owned the role.
I bet a lot of white actors would turn down the role because they’d worry not being as good as Rickman would tank their career.

This is different from the horrific white- and black-washing of historical characters - like in the Gladiator film where they made Caracalla (a Middle-eastern, more Lebanese) into a pasty-white red head or the Cleopatra netflix series that black-washed the in-bred Macedonian Cleopatra VII
Paapa Essiedu is British - both of Ghanaian parents, but he’s British in accent and mannerism and part of the Royal Shakespearean company so he can act.

True - I would argue that Alan owned EVERY role he acted in - man, his acting in Robin hood was incredible, as was his acting in Die Hard, Galaxy Quest, etc.
You might want to take your disputation up with the author, JK Rowling, Woke-Boy.

The rings of power as far as I’ve read, suck because they butcher the material - nevermind the actors.
Even if they replaced the actors with black or brown actors and stayed true to Tolkien’s worldbuilding, it would be fine as these are works of FICTION.
and by the by - I doubt you’ve read Tolkien or Rowling — the two can’t be compared in terms of world building or story telling: Tolkien built up a very rich world. ROwling rehashed 19th and early 20th century British boarding school stories- ref. PG Wodehouse’s early stories - and added a veneer of magic.
Anyhoo - since these are fiction, as long as the character stay true to within the fictional universe, it doesn’t matter who plays them.
In contrast, films like Gladiator II that pretend to be historical and yet have gingers playing Caracalla or the Cleopatra series - well, those are bad screenplays.

Marvel may decide to have a white dude become the next Black Panther to spice up the story line.

Severus Snape is a character in a fictional universe that doesn’t pretend to be any real-life person. So replacing him in another depiction — IF the storytelling is good - can work.
That’s the key - if the storytelling is good.
Paapa Essiedu is a Shakespearean actor and a pretty good one with an impeccable British accent.
Let’s face it - ANY actor would be compared to the inimitable Alan Rickman. Just as Sean Connery lived the 007 role, but we have Daniel Craig as a different kind of Bond, so too can we have Essiedu as a Snape.
Now to the point of Bond being a woman or gay - that wouldn’t work with the CHARACTER being a womanizer.
Snape is cold, calculating, seemingly evil yet not. That’s the character. And it’s a hard one to play.
For the matter, I wonder how many object to the way Hermione is portrayed in the films.
I read the first 6 books before I watched the films and was struck by how much the directors seem to have been in love with Hermione and given her much of the plum lines that should have been with Ron.
Now THAT was character assassination and to my mind it damaged a lot of the book’s showing of friendship as well as reducing Ron to a side-show Bob character.
She already said all she needed to say when she wrote the book, WokeBoy.
