LLast week, apparently catching the world by surprise, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebels launched a surprise offensive against government-controlled positions in northwestern Syria. Within 72 hours, incredibly, they had expelled Assad’s troops from large swathes of Aleppo. HTS’s triumph restored a rebel presence to Aleppo for the first time in eight years and paved the way for the unfreezing of the Syrian Civil War.
Predictably, Russian fighter jets – supporting their ally, Assad – responded by bombing rebel-held areas of Aleppo and Idlib. Iran-aligned Kataib Hezbollah and Fatemiyoun militias also joined the fight on the dictator’s behalf.
Regardless of what Russia and Iran do next, HTS’s attack has shattered the mirage of authoritarian stability that allows Assad to repress Syrians with impunity. For Putin, Assad’s vulnerability is an especially bitter pill to swallow. Russian jets and Wagner Group mercenaries arrived in Syria in 2015 and helped Assad turn the tide of the civil war. It was brutual, but effective.
The Kremlin successfully advertised its Syrian model of counterinsurgency to African countries like Central African Republic and Mali that faced spiraling threats of transnational terrorism. The decisive success of Russia’s military intervention convinced its historic foe Saudi Arabia to engage with Moscow and immeasurably bolstered Russian great power status in the Middle East.

The people opposed to Trump want war so badly but Trump prefers to jawbone the challenges of Iran and Russia.
The blood lust of these Ukrainiacs using Syria as their ‘second front’.
As author state.....”unfreezing of the Syrian Civil War”
Interesting choice of words.....would also mean Obama/Hilary goal for regime change is back on. Just as Georgia and also Romania are being twisted now. They know their time is short before Trump takes over.
And we get a whole new Sunni Salafist terror state that make Assad’s secular state look like paradise.
“The blood lust of these Ukrainiacs using Syria as their ‘second front’.”
That is perhaps the most unintelligible statement grounded in no discernable facts I have ever seen on this site.
Nobody here understands you.
Go away.
” Russian jets and Wagner Group mercenaries arrived in Syria in 2015 and helped Assad turn the tide of the civil war. It was brutual, but effective.”
And we flew missions mostly attacking the Syrian Army. In effect, flying top cover for ISIS/Al Nusra/FSA or whatever their name of the week is.
Is Assad topples, ISLAMISTS WILL RULE SYRIA! Neocons will rejoice at MISSION ACCOMPLISHED,

It’s reported in the Kiev Post that Uke special forces were training the Syrian jihadi rebels. That is probably what he is referring to.
Do we not have confidence in Israel to deal with Hezbollah why do these jihadists have to be unleashed I dare ask?
Ukraine was training the jihadists who invaded the rest of Syria from a part of Syria under Turkish military control.
Turkey has sent drones to Ukraine and yes Ukraine was once part of the Ottoman Empire of the Turks.
Ukrainian Trained, Turkish Sponsored Syrian Rebels Lead Assault on Aleppo"
It’s a re-run. Part 2.
More likely, Assad will retreat to the coast. The Russians will protect their naval base there. Also, that is where most of the Alawites live. So there will be ethnic cleansing in most of Syria, religious minorities will have to flock to the coast for safety.
Seems like the Syrian military isn't large enough to withstand the onslaught by the Islamists (backed by Turkey).
Russia and Iran are 3rd rate nobodies. They were always destined to lose anything they attempt.
Now that the Ukraine is winding down the MIC is starting another war in Syria to replace it.
Iran was far more useful, to Assad, as the IRGC was able to provide what the Assad regime needed most, manpower, in the form of a foreign legion of Shiite militias.
If Assad is deposed, then there will soon be a pipeline from the ME to Europe delivering NatGas and breaking Gazprom (Russia)’s monopoly on the area, and allowing Europe to CEASE buying gas from Russia. THAT’S a real issue here. With the Rubble being in the toilet, if they lose this, then they’re in a REAL pickle.
Blame Israel. They wrecked Hezbollah, the primary component of the Assad regimes manpower. Sometimes things just happen, as consequences of other things, or the unforseen acts of third parties. The world is full of politico-military players, each with their own interests and capable of making their own decisions.
