"Russia is preparing for a war with the West," Bruno Kahl, the head of Germany's foreign intelligence service, said in late November.
But it's not likely to be a large-scale attack into NATO territory, the intelligence chief warned. Moscow could opt for a limited incursion or upping its hybrid warfare tactics to probe the alliance's conviction, Kahl said.
NATO is trying to prepare for both scenarios: an all-out war, and less obvious techniques designed to undermine stability in the alliance's member countries.
"There are multiple options for Russia to test the cohesion of the alliance," including limited land grabs, the former head of NATO's Multinational Corps Northeast based in northwest Poland, Lieutenant General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart, told Newsweek just before leaving his post in November.
The urgency is now obvious from senior military and political officials. Andrius Kubilius, the European Union's commissioner for defense, said in September that defense ministers and NATO commanders "agree that [Russian President] Vladimir Putin could be ready for confrontation with NATO and the EU in six to eight years."
Estonia's foreign intelligence service warned in February NATO "could face a Soviet-style mass army in the next decade" if Russia successfully reforms its military. The army would be "technologically inferior" to NATO forces in areas other than electronic warfare and long-range strikes, the service said, but its "military potential would be significant.

Be ready in 6-8 years? Sounds like they will be ready too late at this point.
And, the part about NATO not keeping up their military at 2% of GDP...well it just might bite big time. Across Europe, NATO is now battling to raise defense spending up and beyond the two percent of GDP requested—but not enforced—by the alliance. Many countries have historically fallen far short of this benchmark in the decades since the end of the Cold War.
But times are changing. European nations have pledged to meet or exceed the target, and officials and experts broadly expect the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump to double down on pressure on Europe to increase military spending further.

The Bill and Melinda depopulation plan continues right on schedule.
If thinks go right, looks like they can take out a couple hundred million before too long. The rest will die of radiation poisoning or starvation or contaminated water.
Claus Schwab says all those innocent people were useless eaters anyway so it’s all good.
Russia is using 33.5% of GDP for military and Ukraine war. They can get a little more committed, but not much. Now, they are discussing attacking NATO? That makes little sense. Further, their war stores are almost depleted. Relying on China and its puppets to supply them. Yet, the lines don’t move much and more than a million have died.
Everything reported about this war looks like propaganda and psychological warfare. Russian escalation seems to be stupid.
I’m no general but Russia would be foolish to wait for NATO to prepare. Russia currently has an advantage with their new missile. Seems like the logical choice would be to strike while the iron is hot.
It seems that way.
But it doesn’t change much either.
Putin might note even be alive in 6-8 years, if that timeline is real.
Old men...fighting old wars...over old lands. That kind of mentality gets those millions killed.
But where are the protests against this insanity? I had a sneak peek at the WH Christmas decorations, there’s a lot of white doves utilized throughout, even the diplomatic room was decorated for the first time. It was a pleasant surprise to not see the haudy and gaudy of recent past years. But the symbolism wasn’t lost on me either.
Doves and a good deal of tasteful civility. It is a recognizable change.
Um, sure looks to me like WWIII - albeit relatively low level with respect to most of Europe - has already started.
Definitely agree with you. It has been evolving in ways most of the American public is ignorant of.
“Now, they are discussing attacking NATO? That makes little sense.”
Prior to the Russian attack on Ukraine most pundits said they wouldn’t do it because it made no sense. Just before WWI academics published works saying there couldn’t be a war because it made no sense. In the early ‘60’s the secretary of Defense said China wouldn’t build an atomic bomb because it wasn’t in their interest. (About six months before their first was tested.) The point here is we can’t put ourselves in the mind of the other person. What we see as not making sense they see as a priority. I think Putin, as opposed to Russia, is a drowning man. Those of us who obviously can’t see what’s going on from his perspective will make predictions based on how WE see things. Expect the worst. Plan for the worst. Hope for the best.
Pledged is the operative word. Most NATO countries can’t afford their generous welfare states and a robust military. They have chosen and will continue to choose butter over guns. A few symbolic years of increased funding will not suffice.
Europe is de-industrializing due the Green movements. And most countries have aging societies with declining populations. Russia is one of them. Couple that with mass migration/colonization from the Third World and you have a continent in deep trouble.
The reality is that Russia doesn’t pose a threat to Europe, but NATO expansion has caused an unnecessary confrontation.
Russia has no desire to attack the west as a whole. They may have no choice, now the west is stirring the pot in Georgia like they did in Ukraine.
It’ll take more than spending 2%. Money, mostly spent on the kind of things they like won’t make them powerful. They are socialist pacifist feminized countries.
And they are too stupid to see they wouldn’t be in this situation if they didn’t keep pushing for this war.
And if they actually get War with a nuclear power, they may not like it. The entire reason Russia but their nuclear force was to ensure no more European invasions. Anyone attacking them faces the destruction of their homeland in 20 minutes.
Hasn’t happened yet, but keep pushing.
IMHO Russia does not have anywhere near the manpower or the resources for WW3, UNLESS it goes nuclear. I wouldn’t recommend pushing them to the big button, especially while a dying Putin has the button.
Hmmmm...
Did the Rooskies flood the EU with migrants...?
Shove the Digital Services Act down the citizenry throats...?
Steal EU elections....?
Tax the population into penury...?
Gee, I don’t think the Rooskies are the real threat, are they?
But they do make a dandy distraction.
“Further, their war stores are almost depleted. “
Hopefully you’re not in the habit of convincing yourself that you know things you don’t at all
Is a vital national security interest threatened?
Do we have a clear attainable objective?
Have the risks and costs been fully and frankly analyzed?
Have all other non-violent policy means been fully exhausted?
Is there a plausible exit strategy to avoid endless entanglement?
Have the consequences of our action been fully considered?
Is the action supported by the American people?
Do we have genuine broad international support?
Do the EU nations believe that they can get all those newly arrived muslim immigrants to actually fight for them?
We know that most EU males will not fight, just like most US males will not fight.
Well gosh, if Russia is preparing to roll its tanks to the English Channel, I guess the Yurps are going to need to start thinking about actually defending themselves for the first time in 80 years or so aren’t they?
