Mexican drug cartels are now recruiting university chemistry students to enhance fentanyl production, according to a New York Times investigation.
Fentanyl, responsible for 74,702 deaths in the US in 2023 alone, is a synthetic opioid notorious for its potency and addictive properties. To maintain their supply chains and increase product potency, cartels like the Sinaloa cartel are targeting young, skilled chemists to independently synthesize precursor chemicals traditionally imported from China.

I think this was in a movie or two............................
Nothing new here...
Well, at least it’s good to see college kids working /s
It’s a shame that the drug labs in Mexico don’t blow up the way munitions plants in Iran blow up.
The Mexican cartel drug labs have killed far more Americans than the Iranian missiles have killed Israelis.
The Israelis know how to hit and destroy their enemies.
Ah, college jobs just aren’t the same since I filed the Illinois tax code and tried to measure bubble chamber tracks till my eyes gave out. Bet these kids got paid better. On the other hand, I never worried about going to jail.

An old high school buddy of mine had a job in a chemical lab at a highly respected institution. After 5 years on the job, she was busted for making crystal meth (or something along those lines). I never spoke to her personally about the crime although I saw her a few years after she got out of prison (I think she did 7 years).
The money may have been nice at the time, but the retirement benefits were the pits. She was smart and actually had a CDL license and other skills, but she blew it all for a few quick dollars. No one would hire after she got out of prison. She passed away at aged 60 about four years ago from a heart condition. At the time she was broke and living on the charity of others.
I have a degree in chemistry, and I find this article to be curious. My degree is helpful in doing chemical calculations and in making reaction predictions.
But you don’t have to be a “skilled chemist” to synthesize a chemical. You just need patience, the proper equipment, and a set of instructions.
It’s not like being, say, a skilled pianist. That’s not something just anyone can pick up and do.
I have heard from folks in LE that most of the grunt word is not done by skilled chemists. The skilled chemists set up the lab/factory, develop the process (an ongoing effort), write the instructions for using it, and oversee the process to ensure that standards are being kept.
“high”er education
Drug abuse is a choice. Regardless of who makes it, those who choose to use it are risking their lives, knowingly.
Sounds like everyone is in on the take except for me and my brother ... and I am not sure about HIM 😏
Breaking Bad
74,702 deaths

This is the most common cause “accidental” deaths in US.
More then cars, guns, ladders, and other accidents TOGETER!
The biggest cause of deaths among young people!
And, the libs are still trying to ban guns, while doing nothing about fentanyl.
And guess who pays for them to go to college.
Thanks for the reply. That makes sense.
Have you ever heard of ‘rainbow fentanyl’?
I’m not sure everyone harmed by that has chosen to be. These
People are harming kids and stupid teens, not just adults.
“The Mexican cartel drug labs have killed far more Americans than the Iranian missiles have killed Israelis.”
I’m pretty sure those Americans killed themselves.
