Long Island Legislator: Red-light camera program will end Dec. 1 in Suffolk County

New York’s Suffolk County is putting the brakes on its red-light camera program after 14 years. It will be out of commission on Dec. 1.

"I get too many tickets. Turning on red when it doesn't say no turn on red," says Ben Leibstein, of Babylon.

Legislator Kevin McCaffrey says lawmakers did not renew the program beyond Dec. 1.

"This program needs to be redesigned about safety, not revenue generation," says McCaffrey.

As News 12 has reported, Suffolk County has about 100 red-light cameras. The tickets are about $115. The program has generated around $39 million each year for Suffolk County.

According to AAA, red-light cameras can increase the number of rear-end crashes when people stop short to not run a red light. But News 12 was told cameras can reduce the number of T-bone crashes at intersections.

"We have seen studies from the insurance Institute for Highway Safety that found that after cameras were removed, injury crashes went up,” says Alec Slatky, with AAA.

That did hold true in Suffolk. According to a county report published in 2022, rear-end collisions went up 45% since the program started in 2010. And while some drivers say it’s a cash grab, others say safety first.

"I think it's for safety, so I'd be against it ending. Every day, you see people blowing through red lights, running through stop signs like they're not even there, so I'm all for it, " says George Retaleato, of West Babylon.

The red-light camera program may be stopping for now in Suffolk County, but it's continuing in Nassau County.

[says Ben Leibstein, of Babylon.]

I won’t believe it until I read it in the Babylon Bee.

they ended the program here in nearby Rochester NY because it was catching the minority drivers and was viewed as “discriminatory.”

Occam’s Razor: Blacks disproportionately don’t follow traffic laws….nor laws regarding rape, murder, burglary, robbery etc.

I was wondering about that.

Right turn on red is a terrible idea. Thousands of walkers and cyclists are killed by it every year.

Only because they’re stupid and don’t do their part to make sure motorists see them, or just wait.

That’s an aveage of 339,130 violations a year whee they actually have the 100 cameras. Doesn’t sound like they need cameras, more like putting people a’foot and then jail if they are caught that way. If you can’t rehabilitate them, then punish them with hefty fines or jail. They did it with alcohol. But make it harder. Both kill innocent people.

Hmmm!
For a moment, thought this article was about red-light districts...

“Red light cameras are a scam. My wife got nailed twice here in So California. Its Bull-s”

Let me guess - it was right turns, without a full stop before the line. 95% of the revenue generated by the cameras was from right turns...something they NEVER tell you.

One of them was. The other one she was jusr sloppy going straight. But tge judge cut her fine in half on the turn ticket-because she showed up in court from 300 to 150

Understand...good to see that one was legit, rather than the right turn scam. Still glad to see them go away, as I’m sure you are too.
