President-elect Donald Trump made the disco classic “Y.M.C.A.” a staple at his rallies during his past two campaigns. And new data shows that, much like Trump’s political fortunes, interest in the song is on the upswing.

The 1978 hit by the Village People has had a busy month four decades later, with skyrocketing search interest on Google, a tripling of measured listenership on the song-tracking site last.fm and, finally, the topping of one Billboard sales chart for the first time.

If a time traveler went back to 1978 to tell Jacques Morali and Victor Willis their newly written song Y.M.C.A would someday be adopted by fans of a President of the United States and sung at gatherings all over the country, they would have thought it was impossible.

When I was equipment handling for mobile disco DJs in (late 70s? early 80s?) it didn’t occur to me that we would someday have a disco president with his own dance.

Often heard at ballgames etc to get crowd
going. Maybe that will stop if owners
object to Trump adopting it...

The first time I heard the song was on American Bandstand and the band remarked that it was the first time they ever saw the dance being done.

Maybe Trump will win over the gay vote with this? A lot of homosexuals are fed up with the trans coup as it is.:)

“everyone does the Trump dance”

We couldn’t help ourselves — the family did the Trump Dance yesterday after Thanksgiving dinner.

Wiki: “In the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump once again used the song at his rallies, usually performing the Trump Dance while it played. (Village People’s) Willis has lamented his use of the song since 2020, and even considered a lawsuit to block Trump from using the song, but confessed there’s “not much he can do about it” and decided it was “beneficial” to have the song back on the charts. Willis also stated he does not support Mr. Trump.”

I wish Trump could have kept Hold On! I'm Coming as his theme song. Isaac Hayes Jr., who owns it, could have made a lot of money off of it had he not nixed its use by the Trump campaign. Nonetheless, "Young Men's Christian Association" (YMCA) is a great tune promoting a venerable organization that promoted Christian values for many decades.

It was the theme of the gay disco world. The brass was so good it would grab you. Never did like “Macho Man” or “In the Navy’ much. The Village People weren’t around all that long.

Starbucks is using HOLD ON song on their Christmas commercial. Honestly I was shocked when I heard the commercial.

Let’s be honest. It’s a pretty mediocre song, at best. But it’s high energy and it’s become the unofficial MAGA anthem so that’s got to count for something.

I agree about “Hold On! I’m Coming” but the Hayes estate let their politics get in the way. I guess they don’t need the money. Or maybe they thought they could extract more money from the Trump campaign. If so, they miscalculated, big time.

Here is the explanation of why this is a story to the likes of CNN and MSN:

And that is it. Period.

That is their narrative.

Only Donald Trump could turn the gayest song in history into a conservative anthem. Dude is a god.
