Great post, one of my all time favorite songs.
Unlike his commie father, Arlo has been an independent, republican, and libertarian from time to time.
I grew up about 45 min. from Great Barrington, MA. Although the song embellishes real live, there is a lot of truth to the story.
A classic but for pure silliness I prefer “The Ballad of Ruben Clamzo and His Strange Daughter in the Key of A”.

Thanks’ for the update. I did not know that she passed. For those of us who grew up in that area, Alison’s Restaurant was very real. And yes, “its about a half a mile form the railroad tracks.”
Good part of the movie was the army physical where Arlo holds up the cup in the men’s room and asks “anybody need some extra?”

Thanks for the news, although sad. Hadn’t heard it.
I think in the wikipedia link pictures (1st and 3rd ones) she had a slight resemblance to Alana De La Garza, at least around the cheekbones and smile and expressions.
De La Garza was incredibly on CSI Miami, Scorpion, Criminal Minds, Law and Order Los Angeles and FBI Most Wanted. Apparently never had a day off for decades.
Terribly saddened to hear about Alice’s passing. Alice’s Restaurant has always been a Thanksgiving tradition for me.

Someone told me on this forum that the song line “passengers will please refrain...” meant to stop using the restrooms because they were getting close to a city or town.
The railroads would just flush the raw contents onto the tracks. That federal regulation is still in place, allowing trains to do that although they say most long run route trains have storage tanks now to empty at stops.
Worse are stories of a woman at her kitchen sink as a rock of blue ice suddenly smashed through her roof and hit the sink. Missed her head. It was a frozen piece of airplane restroom liquid waste released from an airliner far overhead and freezing during the trip down.
