President-elect Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum discussed Mexico’s approach to staving off illegal migration from Mexico but came away from the conversation with different characterizations of the plan.
The call between the two leaders on Wednesday comes on the heels of Mr. Trump’s announcement that he would slap a 25% tariff on Mexico, Canada and China on all products coming from the countries until the flow of illegal migrants and drugs into the U.S. is halted.
Mr. Trump said in a post on Truth Social that their conversation was “very productive” and that Ms. Sheinbaum “has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.”
But Ms. Sheinbaum’s description of the back-and-forth conversation differed.
In one post, she said she had an “excellent conversation with President Donald Trump.”
“We addressed Mexico’s strategy regarding the migration phenomenon, and I shared that caravans are no longer reaching the northern border as they are being addressed within Mexico,” Ms. Sheinbaum said on X.
Hours later, she again posted about the conversation, this time showing that there may be more daylight between their positions on the Southern border.
“In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights,” Ms. Sheinbaum said on X. “Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are assisted before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.”

I believe all Pres. Trump needs to do is completely shut down Mexico’s border, both ways, for one week and things will be different.
The media are determined to make the phone call a negative and Trump and Claudia as enemies forever.
When I was in Mexico the most popular cable channel was cameras set up in front of all the border gates. A running commentary said at which gates the cars were being searched. You could literally watch the cars switch lanes to non-searched gates in real time.

In other words they are not backing down from enabling and supporting caravans to reach the border.
Sounds like Trump needs to raise the tariff to 50%.
Just push back into Mexico every illegal that entered the USA from Mexico.
See if she supports “open borders” then.

I agree with you, she’ll do her song-and-dance, like the Republicans always do when considering a Democrat budget, but then, after Biden’s gone, she will get in line.
However, it would be interesting if she tries to get ‘cute’, and invites China or Russia there to open up military bases (and Biolabs), and then tells the United States to f-off and that it’s none of the business of the US what Mexico does.
All Mexico needs to do is control the border with Guatemala = 540 miles and much of it is difficult to pass through and far less traffic.
We have 1,950 miles, and much of it is easy to pass through, and massive traffic.
This problem is MUCH easier to deal with the way Trump is approaching it.
That said, I'm sure this won't be a big issue. Scheinbaum has to appear to stand up to the evil orange gringo from the North to appease her people. But in reality these are issues of mutual interest that don't require coercion.
A little nudge, something to sweeten the deal for the Mexicans and it should go pretty easy.
Details: She doesn’t want the tariff and wants everyone to pretend Mexico has stopped dumping illegals in our country.
I’m thinking no. Do that and our responsive trade embargo would collapse their economy long before the Russian or Chinese turned a single spade of earth

It’s time to invade Mexico and make it a colony. Enough is enough. Trump will eventually have to do this. They have been a thorn in our side for much too long.
Most countries would have already dealt with them and in a big way.
How long can we let this nothing corrupt country cause us so much pain and suffering anyways? If there has ever been a justified cause to go in with full military force and take over......starting with the utter and complete destruction of the cartels......it is in this case.
She shouldn’t be dictating anything to us. It’s time.
We have friends in Mexico and they say she is totally cartel owned.
How about all the hordes from other continents - South America, Africa, Asia, SE Asia/ME - Don’t tell me that Mehico has no control over how they get into their country and traverse hundreds of miles, get equipped with supplies and kissed away with fond farewell. Calls, threats, and bribes were made after Trump’s call. Wonder how many from Americans, Taxpayers, RNC/DNC donors, Sorosis people, WEF, rich RINO’s who do not want the Cheap Labor Express halted, and those who viscerally hate our nation, our religious, our veterans, our Liberty.
The cartels run Mexico. Closing the border will cost them billions. Trump must play hardball with the Mexican government. And eventually, Trump must declare the cartels as terrorist organizations.
Probably got a death threat from the cartels if she impedes human trafficking and the flow of drugs.
This does not sound like a meeting of the minds or cooperation at all. The woman has a lot to learn. First she has to get out of denial and lying. We live in a world of blindness to the facts in opposition to a perverse altered reality created by stupid liberals.
