Axios CEO Jim VandeHei inspired and energized a National Press Club gala with a passionate, ad-libbed defense of free and fearless reporting, warning that "everything we do is under fire."
"I hate this damn debate about: Oh, we don't need the media," he said Thursday night as he and co-founder Mike Allen accepted the Fourth Estate Award for lifetime achievement. "It's not true."
What they're saying: "I love this country," Jim added. "I'm a beneficiary of this country. Some dipsh*t from Wisconsin can come and start two companies, be up here, win an award."

He was on Morning Joe where Joe and Mika praised his bravery for saying what needed to be said.
Here is a short excerpt of his speech.
They are freaking out over losing the power to influence elections. It’s fun to watch the meltdowns.
He feeling a bit slighted no?. “Its HARD being a journalist, its hard”. Something he has never experienced
I listened to it on Gutfeld last night. Guy sure is upset! LOL!
“To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!”
What an insufferable elitist puke.
He is no different than those snobbish priest in middle ages who lamented the invention of the printing press because gasp, the peasants and surfs would now be able to have their own copy of the bible (and make their own interpretation of scriptures).
Message to Jim VandeHei: Since the invention of the internet, we are ALL reporters now. Anyone with a keyboard can create “news” content and information. Those members in the National Press Club are dinosaurs and will soon be extinct.
That Conan the Barbarian quote has been running through my head since Election Night! :)
Someone should ask him about states (CA, IL, NY) using taxpayer money to publicly fund journalists...
If only the corporate media practiced clear eyed journalism. If only they were balanced. If only they did actually report the truth.
They don’t. Everybody knows it.
That’s why they’re dying.
This idiot is one of the major propagandist mouthpieces in the country.
Mr. VandeHei, you don’t get to decide what is “news” nor whom consumes it.
Idjit.
And BUG EYED MIKE ALLEN doesn't even come UP TO HACK!
Is he a scion of VandeHei Industries?
They really live in an imaginary psychotic bubble world devoid of any contact with reality
Hmm “fearless” reporting? Like reporting the facts that the Harris/Walz campaign lied non stop trying to paint two of the most radically Alt Left candidates in US History as political moderates?
Doing ‘the work’ can mean different things: it can mean ‘doing the work’ to prove a conclusion we want to find.
Or it can mean ‘doing the work’ to flesh out the situation to underand what’s happening.
The fact ‘the press’ is dying is a hint about which choice is being chosen most often. Also, ‘the press’ needs to drop the crap about writing for prizes. The only prize worth having is the respect and trust of your readers.
He is like 1% correct. We do need _a_ media.
We just do not need these delusional people. We need people who will tell us the truth.
Chris Plante just spoke about this in the 9:30 half hour. He had the same take as me.
