BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A little-known, far-right populist took the lead in Romania’s presidential election Sunday, electoral data showed, and will likely face leftist Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu in a runoff in two weeks, an outcome that rocked the country’s political landscape.
Calin Georgescu, who ran independently, led the polls with around 22% of the vote, while Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party, or PSD, trailed at 20%. Elena Lasconi of the Save Romania Union party, or USR, stood at about 18%, and George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, or AUR, took 14.1%.
After polls closed, 9.4 million people — about 52.4% of eligible voters — had cast ballots, according to the Central Election Bureau. The second round of the vote will be held Dec. 8.
Thirteen candidates ran for the presidency in the European Union and NATO member country. The president serves a five-year term and has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security, foreign policy and judicial appointments.
Georgescu, 62, ran independently and was not widely known. He outperformed most local surveys, sending shockwaves through Romania’s political establishment as he ascended to poll position.

Why is he 'far right'? He's not a socialist?
Appears to be rank choice voting.
Does the socialist get shot when he loses? Romanian term limits should be the model for all democracies.
The bias in this type of reporting is ridiculous. A party that is winning elections, or doing well in an election, by definition isn’t “far” anything. It is necesssarily somewhere in the “center”. Yet anything this side of Marxism is “far right” in the media lexicon.
There is no ‘right’ in the eyes of the present-day media. Anyone who is not a Marxist is FAR-right.
It’s getting better. They used to call them ultra far right or extremist far right.
The socialist president was polling as winning 28-15, and ended up finishing behind, 20-22. Fifteen points off.
The left is surprised that nobody wants their version of a dream world.
“Appears to be rank choice voting.”
If Rigged Choice Voting was being used, why would there be another election on Dec. 8?
RCV provides for “instant” runoff. If there’s another election, then it’s just a normal runoff.
In the U.S. the difference between "right wing" and "left wing" is different than in Europe. The American "right wing" promotes individual rights whereas the American "left wing" favors group rights and government control.
You've got to understand that in Europe, "right wing" means nationalist and "left wing" means internationalist. These terms do not give any insight into rights of the individual or government control. The Nazi Party is "right wing" because it was nationalist, not because it promoted the rights of its citizens.
In Romania, Călin Georgescu is "right wing" because he's a nationalist and skeptical of Western international organizations, specifically the EU and NATO. Georgescu does not prioritize individual rights, and he advocates for a much larger role for government control of the economy, supporting both autarky and "sustainability". In American terms, Georgescu is approaching socialism if not actually a socialist.
Thank you for that thoughtful explanation.
To me both fascism and communism are “left wing” as they mean more government control.
“Far right” is the term used for anyone that does not worship at the shrines of Government bureaucratic control of every aspect of your life, unlimited illegal immigration and Abortion up to the minute of birth paid for by Taxpayers.
Correct. God be with him.
Alex, I’ll take MAGA equivalent for $1000.
That’s interesting that they use the same pollster as the Des Moines Register…
