Ukraine’s war losses weigh on cultural heart of Lviv

When Russia poured troops into Ukraine nearly three years ago, Yaroslav Simkiv expected a global backlash that would force it to quickly end its full-scale invasion.

Since then, the greying trumpeter has provided the aching soundtrack to hundreds of military funeral processions as they have streamed through the cobblestone streets of Lviv.

“They can agree on an armistice and all that, but then everything will be left to our children and grandchildren,” said Simkiv, echoing a widespread belief in Ukraine that Russia will continue pressing the country for years to come.

His grim task in the Western Ukrainian city is a symbol of the war’s devastating toll as fighting approaches the 1,000-day mark, killing troops at the front, sapping precious resources and exhausting the population.

Despite an initial surge in support from Kyiv’s allies and early gains by its military, Ukraine has lately been unable to halt Russia’s grinding advance across the sprawling front line.

From the beginning I thought that Ukraine had as much chance of winning against Russia as Japan did against the US after Pearl Harbor.

That is, in a war of attrition against Russia, Ukraine doesn’t stand a chance. You either win in the early days of the war, or you surrender. And it is not lost on me that the war is being fought on Ukrainian, rather than Russian soil.

Many people don’t know this, but by the time the US gained control over Guadalcanal, the Japanese were not fighting to “win”. They were fighting to get a better deal in a negotiated peace.

Eventually, Ukraine will have to negotiate, or watch their country turned to rubble. The good news is that Russia will almost certainly take a negotiated peace.

Late in WWII, the USSR rolled over Austria, only to give it up later.

That is effectively correct.

WWII Pacific then evolved into slow but steady losses for the Japanese and their inflexible (insulated) Emperor + Wartime Government System.

They were unable and unwilling to surrender before an enraged Ordinary America gave the Punishment Option to President Truman and the US Military.

Other peoples can become enraged as well.

Maybe Trump can deport the Trennies and the Ms13 etc. to the Ukrainian army. They need more cannon fodder over there.

War is Hell. It’s sad to watch the euthanizing of older Ukrainians drafted into military service because it’s the 25 and olders that were made subject to the draft.

“They were fighting to get a better deal in a negotiated peace.”

Yes. That was their “strategy”. Grab a defensive position so strong that the cost to defeat them would be too high.

Yet we were fully ready to risk literally millions of lives in a Japanese invasion. Fortunately, we came up with the bomb. It saved countless lives.

Galicia is part of Poland anyway. Putin will have to wait for that.

Yes. They really miscalculated and underestimated us.

Lwów was Polish from 1920 to 1939.
Before that it was Austrian and German.

But who is Yaroslav Simkiv?

I can no hits on the internet as to who this guy is exactly. In fact, all hits using his name to search, all point to the same exact story as it appears on every website that is repeating this story, including this post on FR repeating the story.

Once they figured out we could decimate them while risking the lives of pretty much zero Americans, fighting on would have been madness. Literally.

Yup.

Zelensky is very unpopular in the Ukraine and so is the war.

He would not have suspended elections if he and the war had broad based support from the Ukrainian people.

The only reason Zelensky has any support is because of massive Western money transfusions that are essentially foreign welfare payments to a majority of Ukrainians to buy their support for continuing hostilities.

Once the plug gets pulled on the foreign welfare cash propping up Zelensky and the rest of the Ukraine, the Ukraine is going to be in the world of hurt.

That would be my guess, but I can't even find out if he is Ukrainian, Russian, or none of the above.

For knowing that is important to this story. Which side was expecting a global backlash because of the invasion? Was it Russia or Ukraine?
