An American Airlines flight nearly crashed into a mountain range in Hawaii — but escaped tragedy when it was ordered to rapidly gain altitude, officials said Friday.
Los Angeles-bound Flight 298 had just taken off from Honolulu at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday when the air traffic controller ordered the crew to “expedite your climb” — meaning quickly ascend to avoid danger, according to audio broadcast by the website LiveATC.
“Number 298 turn right, expedite your climb through terrain and then turn right,” the traffic controller said,

Another DIE hire?
Boeing or Airbus, the article doesn’t specify.
How incompetent do you have to be? Have they never flown out of Oahu before?
From the brief description, it sounds more like a pilot problem than an aircraft problem.
That entire state seems to be suffering from a severe infestation of apostrophes recently.
You can’t dawdle about climbing out of Honolulu, the eastbound runways are aimed at the mountains. The clouds have rocks in them.
“Another DIE hire?”
almost guaranteed ...
Yeah, it’s a wierd use of the apostrophe, borrowed not from grammar but from musical notation. It means a stop, like the difference between shifting from “I” to “a” in “I am” as opposed to running from “i” into “a” as in “Miami.”
I searched for a name of the pilot. None have been given.
The Pilot, identified as Latonisha Washington was quoted as saying the plane was never in any kind of trouble and anyone who says otherwise is racist......
Wow. 60 years ago today, a Bonanza Airlines Fairchild F-27 slammed into a mountain killing all 29 aboard during a freak snowstorm.
I hiked out to the crash site today. I saw a ink pen either used by the crew or the crash investigators.
Whatever. May they rest in peace.
Everybody in Hawaii seemed to get along just fine without all the apostrophes for a long time.
BAWAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*snort* hahaha *cough, cough* .....giggle
“Have they never flown out of Oahu before?”
Right. I never thought that Oahu works be a problem. The airport at Molokai is scary but Oahu ... doesn’t make sense.
The radar graphic says Airbus - A321 NEO. Newer plane and certainly not an aircraft issue - we’ll have to see if they will dare inform us if a DEI First Officer is involved.
It’s a glottal stop. It’s important in the Hawaiian language.
Trump will be setting up an airlift to bring desperately needed consonants to Hawai’i from Krygstsk, and vowels from Hawai’i to Krygstsk.
As if it a mystery since a pilot can see the islands for hundreds of miles.
