General Motors (GM) announced Friday it is is laying off some 1,000 workers worldwide, cutting costs as it tries to compete in a crowded global automobile market.
The GM workers impacted, mostly white collar, were told early in the morning as they prepared for the weekend. The company confirmed the layoffs in a statement but gave few details, AP reports.
The move comes on the back of a recent GM recall for 450,000 vehicles due to a fault in the braking system.
“We need to optimize for speed and excellence,” the statement said. “This includes operating with efficiency, ensuring we have the right team structure and focusing on our top priorities.”

Geez. I hope they weren’t illegal aliens. They are already costing the taxpayers a fortune.
Focusing so much of their efforts on EVs ended up being a losing proposition. GM is short for government motors and government is not efficient at anything. Their promise to be solely EV based by 2035 was/is a killer.

I have been in the middle of these types of headcount reductions.
It is brutal. It is senior leaderships fault though they take no responsibility.
It really comes down to the seat you’re in when the music stops.
You get a call and you are told your services are no longer required. You are to shut off your laptop. Any attempts to save or delete files or send emails will be investigated and prosecuted. You are told where to turn in your laptop with a deadline. Support services contacts are provided, but that’s it.
You are completely caught off guard. In the case of you being a breadwinner, your family has no income. You now have to ready your resume and enter a job market flooded with candidates for a handful of jobs.
The anxiety and stress of the situation is overwhelming.
Say a little prayer for these people. They were brutalized by the incompetence of senior leadership to steer the ship toward growth and success.
The death throes continue thanks to Bidenomics ... hopefully we can hold on until the losers clear out of DC
Maybe just the fallout from the EV failure to launch situation?
1. Security guards issued with shotguns
2. Big pallet of cardboard boxes arrive at goods inward
3. All staff required to attend box assembly 101 class
4. Cafeteria goes to 9 to 5 operation instead of 24 hours.
5. Corporate office remains in Bay Area
6. Manufacturing goes to Texas/Arizona/New Mexico
Spokeshave who remained in the Bay Area with children in local schools.
I wonder how much more money the CEO of GM will receive because of this?
