Ron DeSantis hints at passing an open carry bill in Florida’s 2025 legislative session

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis just hinted at the possibility of open carry legislation coming before Florida lawmakers in the upcoming 2025 legislative session.

In an interview with radio host Bob Rose on Nov. 4, Rose brought up his preference for open carry, the wearing or carrying of a firearm in a visible manner, over other potential legislative initiatives, specifically referencing Amendment 3 – a recently proposed ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana that failed to pass.

“I’d much rather have open carry than weed, but that’s just me, governor,” Rose said. In response, DeSantis hinted that open carry could indeed be on the table. “You may get that in this upcoming legislative session, stay tuned on that.” Rose, seemingly enthused, added, “I’ll hold you to it if I get the chance, governor.”

With Republican supermajorities in both chambers of Florida’s legislature, 28-12 in the State Senate and 85-35 in the State House, the pathway appears open for such a measure to be seriously considered, especially with a Republican governor. (Related: OPEN CARRY transforms into OPEN TYRANNY in Virginia as judge rules Second Amendment null and void in state capitol.)

Gun rights advocates argue that passing open carry would improve Florida’s standing among gun-friendly states because, despite its reputation as a conservative stronghold, Florida currently does not allow open carry. In fact, Florida ranks 22nd in Guns & Ammo magazine’s list of best states for gun owners. Additionally, Florida’s stance aligns with a handful of states with stricter gun control policies, including California, Connecticut and Illinois.

This has been seen as an underperformance given Florida’s conservative profile, setting it apart from many other Republican-leaning states.

You need open carry.

Few people actually open carry even if it's legal and that is because you surrender the element of surprise etc.

However, open carry takes away the liberal Karen's ability to call the police because she sees the outline of a gun through the shirt, or a gun when someone is bent over, or, or, or.

Open carry protects the concealed hand gun carrier from the concerned liberal Karen looking for an excuse to call the police or make a scene.

I have mixed feelings about open carry.

On the one hand, the 2A is the 2A. The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. That language is pretty clear.

On the other hand, in the vast majority of scenarios, open carry is just stupid, and done primarily to (over)emphasize 2A concerns. I don’t really WANT anyone to know I’m carrying, let alone where my firearm is located.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but if it was the law of the land, it would be pretty dangerous, even on conservative Staten Island...with a lot of hot heads who have never held a gun before.

It’s the constitution so it SHOULD be allowed.

I know people don’t like strings attached to constitutional issues...but it should be required for first time gun users to take a safety course...a GOOD and unrushed one.

I dont want half the people I know in nyc having a gun without learning how to use it!

Fear is silly. Look at facts. Fact is that many States already have open carry and NONE of your fears have played out.

Pass open carry and repeal the restrictions brought in on semi automatic rifles, binary triggers, etc a few years ago.

No. You can’t call yourself a Constitutional Conservative if you really believe that a right requires a prerequisite. A right hindered is no right at all.

I’m not saying training isn’t a good idea, but there are less infringing ways to promote firearms training. For example, states should pass laws requiring every county to maintain a public shooting range and offer free training courses. I suspect the biggest hindrance to training isn’t the public’s lack of desire for it, but rather the lack of access and cost. Congress should create a fund to assist states in this and promoting safe firearms usage. Make that the role of the ATF instead of the anti-2A agency it has become.

Karen’s ability to call the police because she sees the outline of a gun through the shirt, or a gun when someone is bent over,

~~~
Neither of which are a violation of the concealed carry statutes in Florida.
790.053(1);
“...is not a violation of this section for a person licensed to carry a concealed firearm as provided in s. 790.06(1), and who is lawfully carrying a firearm in a concealed manner, to briefly and openly display the firearm to the ordinary sight of another person, unless the firearm is intentionally displayed in an angry or threatening manner, not in necessary self-defense.”
But you’re right. Karens gonna go all Karen.
It’s not only the Karens causing problems with accidentally showing your firearm, it’s the Barney Fifes who can ruin your day.
In early fall of 2023 I did a 23 state solo motorcycle trip, 11,000 miles. Of the 23 states I went through Florida was the only one without Open Carry. Not the end of the world but my FN Five Seven is pretty large and hard to conceal.
I used to be totally against open carry as it was my belief someone could just easily take it away and use it to kill you.
That was until I discovered those locking holsters, where a person needs to press a little lever to get the weapon unlocked from the holster. It’s the best thing since sliced bread. You can never lose a gun by having it fall out.
Still, I do not wear open because I do not want to be pointed out by some karen and made a public spectacle.
The armed lifestyle is perhaps in danger of becoming normalized after being underground for many decades. My friends who say, “I support the right but not the practice,” are simply insisting that it remain underground.
“Don’t ask. Don’t tell!”
Open or concealed. Both are covered under the 2A and are illegally “infringed” upon at both the State and Federal levels.
“The 2A only applies to the FedGov”...
No. The Pre-amble to the BoR clearly states that after ratification by the States, that the first 10 Amendments apply everywhere. Further the 14ths’ “privileges and immunities” clause re-states this same basic fact.
These are INDIVIDUAL Rights. They should never have been given up to begin with...
People who denigrate the choices of others on the internet absent full knowledge of the other persons circumstances are also... unimpressive.
I carry concealed to not scare the sheep in daily life. I carry open in the field while hunting/hiking because it is more comfortable and easier to deploy if needed.
Either way... the government, under the US Constitution, has no rightful say in the matter.
That sort of derision is the attitude of anti-2A police and military. They too fancy themselves better than their unimpressive fellow citizens, whom they deem unworthy of the right to keep and bear arms. Fortunately for us all, their delusions of superiority have no bearing upon our individual rights and liberties.
Go further, DeSantis! Meet with Dr Edwin Viera and re-establish the constitutional militia in every county. Make the model for all other states and seal the deal preventing stolen elections, organized crime, and illegal invaders.
And start making MEN at a young age.
