MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s government on Monday signaled that it planned to hit back with trade restrictions of its own if President-elect Donald J. Trump followed through on his threats to impose sky-high tariffs on Mexican exports to the United States.

“If you put 25 percents tariffs on me, I have to react with tariffs,” Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s economy minister, told a radio interviewer on Monday. “Structurally, we have the conditions to play in Mexico’s favor,” he added.

“A tariff war doesn’t end well,” said Valeria Moy, the general director of the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness, an economic research institute. “The United States stands to lose — and Mexico stands to lose even more.”

“The answer to tariffs is not more tariffs; it’s to sit down and negotiate,” Ms. Moy added.

They’re in no position to react in any way other than saying, “Yes sir, Mr. Trump.”

Oh no, I better stock up on Tequila, Avacados and Wrangler Jeans.

Mexico needs to sell us a lot more than we need to buy stuff from them.

Sure, Mexico.

What we need is tariffs on foreign direct labor (e.g., offshore IT work).

Yes protect an auto worker from depredations from foreign cars shipped over.

MUST protect the same American from cents-on-the-dollar labor sold directly to the US market.

Rotten Avocado’s and product instantly come to mind.

Then we have full strip searches of 18-wheelers headed North for anything that is shipped.

No RR traffic for imports form Mexico.

Enforce Remain In Mexico - Just cuttingf off the human trafficing would fix much of the crime.

Always remember that we have the ultimate "stick" on the rest of the world. We have the largest markets in the world. Everyone wants access to our consumers. Some overseas products are only sold to Americans. If you make American flags in China and you loose access to the US, your company is finished. If you make a $4 relay for a GMC truck and it is about to cost $8, Detroit won't call you anymore. Mexico is much more today than a bunch of fruit pickers.

They may posture and bitch about everything, but eventually they have to come around to Trump or they are out of business unless Mexico buys a bunch of GMC trucks and China buys a bunch of American flags.

In the end, China could end up just making those little bamboo umbrella's we put in drinks if they don't please Trump. The vast majority of "stuff" purchased in the world is purchased in the US. Even Britain and Germany buys about a third to half of what Americans buy.
