Unless they have better footage it appears the man was trying to make a point gesturing with his hands and when turned towards the officer he made very light contact with the vest. Or he was trying to get the officer to look at what he was indicating. Cop needs to be fired, get his qualified immunity removed and sue along with the department.
More...right now if I were any insurance company I wouldnt write a liability policy for ANY police dept UNLESS it was at least a 10 million dollar deductible, or more.
The guy got a ticket & refused to sign it. Cop told him he would go to jail if he didn’t sign (don’t know if that is true). The man slapped the cop on the chest and the cop took him down.
Not at all. This is a cop that I will not stand tall for. He clearly used excessive force.
Yeah. I know the saying.
But I have some cop friends who put their lives on the line every day dealing with stuff most normal people could not comprehend. Most cops are good, at least in Texas and Ohio (where I know them).
Some cops are scum. My cop friends have actually taken down some bad cops. Harshly. Seen it in person.
Maybe the ones I know are the exceptions but like to think most cops aren't just part of another well-armed gang. (This excludes places like LA and such where that pretty much is all they are -- a better well armed gang with the force of law behind them.)
“Assault on a Police Officer”, as a distinct crime, needs to disappear. “Assault BY a Police Officer” needs to be vigorously prosecuted and severely punished.
Again, that crap needs to end. Technically, the cop is committing an assault when he accosts a citizen and impedes the citizen's free movement. The cop only gets away with it because of the magic costume. Cops need to DE-escalate, the opposite of what too many of them actually do.
I’d ask her if she was busy when she got off duty.
End qualified immunity and some of this BS will end.
The cop did not tell him he was under arrest until he slammed him to the ground. But he was knocked out by then. The cops’ report said the old man hit him and resisted arrest. Cops know that the superiors hardly ever look at the body cam.
Cops think they are above the law. If you think they do not, ask them the last time they gave a fellow officer (or his or her spouse) a ticket. They look out for themselves first and then everyone else and are under no obligation to look out for the average citizen (per USSC).
The other driver got a ticket too. But the cop did not tell her she had to sign the ticket.

Totally agree. There are many videos of a cop positioning himself such that a civilian accidentally bumps into him. Bingo! That’s assault on a police officer.
The worst ones are when a cop without a warrant puts his foot into a front door, and then the homeowner tries to shut the door. Bingo again. That’s assault on a police officer.
Unlike with those two examples, the old Vietnamese guy is not totally innocent. His touching the cop was *technically* an assault. But it was one that a decent and humane cop would have ignored.
Bad move and justified ROE but, over reaction
Thnx for better context video
Yes. It SHOULD be considered self defense. In fact, in that situation a much stronger response (use your imagination) should also be considered self defense. A cop attempting to enter your home without a warrant (or 'exigent circumstances') is WORSE than a common criminal.
> Most cops are good… <
Based on my experience and observation (your mileage may vary), I’d say that 15% of cops are garbage, complete trash. The rest range from just okay to amazing.
Yet I am quite critical of policing. And that’s because that 15% number is way, way too high. Consider this. Would you go to a dental practice where there was a 15% chance you’d get a monster dentist who would deliberately make your problem worse?
I actually don’t know how to fix this. Removing qualified immunity for *casual* acts of police misconduct might help. (But keep it when the cop is under stress and pressure.)
In this particular video, the cop was under no pressure. He casually decided to severely injure that old guy. No qualified immunity. Prison time.
It was stupid to put his hands on the cop or his finger on his chest whatever, however the retaliation went overboard. Police officer should not behave this way. Period. Shows lack of self-control.

My experience is a bit lower, but yeah from what I've seen in big cities, 15% is not unreasonable.

We completely agree here.

Great point. Unless I know the cop, my rule is the best interaction with police is to NOT have an interaction with police.

Agree. Wish I had an idea how to fix this, too. Good cops are under an insane amount of pressure every day and should not be taken down for some political reason or such. Bad cops use that as an excuse.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE
Ya know sometime we might have to find something we disagree about because you obviously have insight. Also, I like respectful debate because sometimes I learn something new. Actually you helped me clarify my thoughts on this issue. Gee, Freepers (including you) actually think about things and are willing to respectfully discuss. What a concept.
To clarify:
When I said, “15% is not unreasonable,” I meant a 15% estimate of bad cops is not unreasonable. Even 1% of bad cops is NOT acceptable.
The heavy handed actions of police in Canaduh, especially during the CONdemic, caused MANY good and decent cops to take early retirement, leaving mostly jack-booted thugs and DIE (diversity, inclusivity, equity) hires, who owe their jobs to the gubmint and otherwise, would be in gangs or on welfare, or both.
Canadian cops are much more likely act like 'STASI', than US cops. Our 'Charter of Rights and Freedoms' is much closer to the Constitution of the USSR, than the Constitution of the USA.
