President Maia Sandu wins second term in Moldovan election in rebuke to Kremlin

The pro-western incumbent Maia Sandu has won a second term in office in the Moldovan presidential election, preliminary results have shown, marking a significant boost for the country’s EU aspirations and a clear rebuke to Moscow.

The runoff election was seen as a crucial indicator of whether the country’s long-term geopolitical alignment will be with Russia or Europe.

The pro-western incumbent, Sandu, who has intensified the nation’s efforts to break away from Moscow’s influence, was facing the Kremlin-friendly political newcomer, Alexandr Stoianoglo, from the Socialist party, in the second round of voting on Sunday.

With 98% of the ballots counted, Sandu led with 54.35%, the Central Election Commission said. With only parts of the country’s diaspora vote still outstanding, analysts said that Sandu was all but guaranteed to win re-election.

Early results indicated that the large Moldovan diaspora, accounting for about 20% of the electorate, had overwhelmingly voted for Sandu. The result will be a significant boost for Sandu and her long-term EU agenda.

Sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania, a member of NATO and the European Union, Moldova has two main languages — Romanian and Russian — and has seesawed between East and West since it gained independence in 1991 as it struggled with endemic corruption.

Moldova’s population, reduced since independence by a steady exodus of young people seeking work abroad, has shrunk by more than 35 percent to under three million. But, despite its small size, the country has become a focus of big power rivalry.

The Europeans suppressed the Russian Moldovan diaspora vote.

But that's how you greasy neocon authoritarian globohomos roll...

This was a major victory for the European Union, the rebirth of the Soviet Union.

You've learned nothing in the past 50 years. Congratulations.

In a (probably futile) effort to educate the snarling, Putler-loving idiots above this post:

Of course it was suppression, that’s what the losers will say.
Can’t wait to see the same talk from CNN, pmsnbc, abc, cbs, npr, young Turks, and nbc.

“Anti-democracy” election denial and interference will be all the rage and “justified” by the usuals after Tuesday

Kiry - perhaps reading in Latin script is hard for you. Do you prefer Cyrillic?

The diaspora vote was overwhelming for the incumbent President.

Putin didn’t manage to steal the vote as he did in 2020 stealing it for Biden — with a weak President like Brandon, Putin got away with a lot that he wouldn’t have been able to if Trump were in power

“The Europeans suppressed the Russian Moldovan diaspora vote. But that’s how you greasy neocon authoritarian globohomos roll.”

Yep, CLASSIC cheating by the Neocons. They made it easy to vote for the Moldovans living in EU countries (who, of course, voted for the EU candidate, as they knew their welcome would run out in the EU, if an pro-Moldovan won), and, at the same time, they made it next to impossible for Moldovans in Russia to vote, as they would have voted pro-Moldovan, rather than for the EU-captured candidate.

Same tactic being used by the Leftists here with our military not being able to obtain ballots, while illegals here are free to vote (and encouraged to vote) in many states.

Leftists know they can never win fair elections, so they cheat in any and all ways possible. We used to mock Third World countries and the Soviets...now it has come home to us.

By the way, how did that vote in Georgia go a couple of weeks ago, I heard it was clean...

I’m pretty sure both Georgia and The Moldovan people are being set up to become the next Ukraine to fight Russia.

If Moldova was smart, it would petition to merge with Romania to avoid Russia agitating to take it over.

Did the Russian troops stationed in the occupied part of Moldova, “Transdniestria”, get to vote?

“I’m pretty sure both Georgia and The Moldovan people are being set up to become the next Ukraine to fight Russia”

What, they’re going to “provoke Russia” by refusing Russia’s advances, inciting invasion? Same as a woman refusing a man’s advances incites rape?

You are right! Actually, 10-12 years back, the President of Romania Basescu, sad that Moldova will join Romania in EU format. Lookes like that prediction is come trough.

Georgia has no depth to fight off Muscowy.

Moldova is most likely going to rejoin Romania (it was grabbed from Romania in 1945 by the Russians) sans Transdniestr.

There is little place for a Russian invasion

Justa — according to rott, if a country refuses to do whatever the Kremlin wants, then they are “provoking Russia”.
