Gen Z is missing the equivalent of one work day every week due to their mental health, according to a new study.
The health and life insurance company Vitality found that Gen Z employees in the UK reportedly lose an average of 54 productive days per year, clocking into work every day but not operating at peak efficiency.
Across the board, nonproductive or missed days of work have cost the UK economy more than $178 billion, Vitality reported. In the US, according to past Gallup data, dissatisfied and detached workers cost the world an estimated $8.8 trillion.
According to the Vitality analysis of 4,000 people, young workers are 224% more likely to be depressed compared to their older colleagues, and employees who earn less than $38,000 per year are more likely to feel neglected by employers.
The cause, the company found, was mental health struggles.

In the UK they incentivize people to take mental health days off so they do.
I think there are many reasons for this. I think the COVID lockdowns had a very bad effect on wide segments of society. Young people especially. Are the “requirements” of normal life really “required”? During the pandemic, a lot of stuff became “optional” and now people see life through that lens.
And beyond the pandemic, I maintain that we (older people) have built a difficult and non-functioning world. $35T debt? no problem. $500,000 “starter home”? That’s life.
Basic daily tasks? Well, you need to use your phone. Have to get that app, you know. And you’ll need a PC too. And email. There are about 7 security hoops you need to jump through. And a credit card. But, if you line all those things up and fill out all of the paperwork, then you will be allowed to perform that basic daily task.
And you can’t trust the government. And you can’t trust the elections. And you can’t trust the media. And you can’t trust the medical establishment. And you can’t trust the dating scene.
But the problem — everyone says — the problem is that you need to get off your lazy ass and be a damn cog in the machine and just suck it all up.
People are calling in sick to that world. I don’t really blame them. I think society has become deeply and fundamentally broken.
“I need some ‘down time’.” LOL.
Young workers are 224% more likely to be depressed because they have to work lottery ticket failed.
"Bitch, please!"
Based on our kid’s experience at work in recent years, you can add the later Millennials to this group, especially during the COVID mandates and lockdowns. Basically crying at work to their managers and team leads (my kid at the time).
Not surprising at all.
> clocking into work every day but not operating at peak efficiency <
That statement in the article doesn’t quite match the title. Are they counting being present - but not operating at peak efficiency - as missing work?
If so, their statistics might not mean a whole lot. After all, “not operating at peak efficiency” is a subjective thing.
Yes, how would GenZ or GenX respond to a need to storm the beaches of Normandy, Guadalcanal, or Iwo Jima?
...and it’s always somebody else’s fault.
I hear that homelessness and starvation cures this problem
Its the bronze age beurocracy that they are experiencing. They know they are slaves to the state. Of course that’s the mental anguish that they experience.
They’re given their one day to blow the steam of and go wild and its all paid for by the master.
You make a lot of good points.
Difficult to point to any single person, cause or institution responsible for the unfortunate spiraling into a dysfunctional society.
But, it’s certainly easy to identify many partially responsible players.
Our school system, politicians, corporations, unions, parents, ourselves….
I’ve gone for a decade and not miss one day.
Yeah. She's the typical employee from her generation.
If you're looking for better performance, you'll have to hire an immigrants. Usually, they're more motivated.
My kids are Gen Z and they were raised to set goals, seek goodness and righteousness, and understand nothing in life is ever be free.
But I see their classmates, kids they grew up with, hear their stories. I've come to the conclusion that America, because of its comfort, wealth and relative peace, has raised a generation with a large number of emotional and psychological cripples.
God bless your kids
Wow
Great points. And I think they realize what the future looks like, but are unable/unwilling to learn to cope with it. Sadly many think the democrats are the answer to all this, when in reality it is mostly those policies that are responsible for creating things today.
