Cash Not Drugs" proposal, under which certain residents would receive money to stay sober, is now closer to becoming reality after the city's Board of Supervisors passed the bill earlier this week.

The bill gives welfare recipients a $100 city-issued gift card for each week they stay sober. Proponents of the plan call it a humane and effective way of dealing with the drug crisis plaguing San Francisco.

Supervisors Ahsha Safai, Dean Preston, Matt Dorsey, and Rafael Mandelman sponsored the bill.

Eligible recipients include those enrolled in the County Adult Assistance Program (CAAP). The Cash Not Drugs is completely voluntary and expected to last for three years.

Participants would be tested and paid weekly.

Read more carefully, $400 per month.
I think I’ll apply.

Not monthly, I read that as “weekly”. $400/month.

Save it all up for a couple months, and you can throw a hell of a "Fall Off The Wagon" party.

At least they’ll be tested for drugs. But I wouldn’t be excited if my tax money was going towards that. Will the next bright idea be to pay people not to commit crimes?

There was a Doonesbury story about a fabulously paid athlete and his slimy sports agent.

“As representative of the owner he wants to cancel the $50 million signing bonus. He thought he was buying a race horse.”

Agent: “That’s fine. We were going to get the contract cancelled because we forgot to include a $10,000 bonus for each week my client remains drug free.”

Every week turns out to be slightly more than $400 a month on average

52 weeks x $100 / week - $5200 / 12

$433.33/avg per month

Hey, I’m gonna sign up too. I can stay off drugs for 3 years (since I never tried them in the first place)

WOOHOO! Free money!!

I would guess a number of them are already being tested.

Parole, probation.

Either way, how much am I gonna be paid to stop eating McDonald’s? :)

Or people to stop eating red meat?

Or people to stop eating sugar cereals?

The list is infinite...as are CA’s pockets, it seems! :)

The Cash Not Drugs is completely voluntary and expected to last for three years - or until taxpayer money runs out (whichever is last).

Yeah, sure!

And federal Income Tax was originally going to be capped at a whopping ONE PERCENT of income, and be limited to a short span of years.
