What caused deadly floods in Spain? The impact of DANA explained

Oct 30 (Reuters) - Catastrophic flash floods that have killed at least 72 people in Spain are caused by a destructive weather system in which cold and warm air meet and produce powerful rain clouds, a pattern believed to be growing more frequent due to climate change.

The phenomenon is known locally as DANA, a Spanish acronym for high-altitude isolated depression, and unlike common storms or squalls it can form independently of polar or subtropical jet streams.

While experts say it will take time to analyse all the data to determine if this particular DANA was caused by climate change, most agree that an increase in temperature of the Mediterranean and warmer and more humid atmospheric conditions contribute to producing more frequent extreme episodes.

"We're going to see more of these flash floods in the future. This has the fingerprints of climate change on it, these terribly heavy rainfalls, and these devastating floods," said Hannah Cloke, professor of hydrology at the University of Reading.

Here’s the “climate change” they’re looking for.

Having lived in southern Spain I can say that when it rains there (rare) it tends to be intense but short. And shops take full advanced to roll out a display of way overpriced umbrellas.

In the northwest, on the other hand, it seems it almost never stops raining.

First I’ve heard of this flooding phenomenon. Interesting.

“ determine if this particular DANA was caused by climate change,”

Everything is caused by climate change .
I saw a gum wrapper outside of the local grocery store.
Of course climate change was to blame.

Careful analysis of the data shows that this particular DANA was caused directly by the exhaust of cars owned by Trump supporting Americans.

Yep, it was those fascist and nazi garbage voters that did it.

They predicted this would happen for years, right? They predict all the disasters, they had to know this was coming.

They don’t understand the causes enough to predict it. They can’t positively explain it when it does occur, and yet they are asking us to standby while they develop a theory that allows the leftist darling climate change to be at fault.

Assholes.

Report the event and assist in aid.

Maybe if they check their zipcode they’d find the reason for the season. It rained, the climate changed as it always does more less hot cold windy calm fifty fifty.

You mean, like what’s happening in the Midwest right at this very moment?

You are correct. In the Basque country it never stops raining - or it seems that way. The climate there is very comparable to the US/Canadian west coast - think Seattle-Vancouver. This is true from Galicia to, say, Cherbourg in France.

There’s a good reason why there’s a classic French movie, “Les Parapluies de Cherbourg” (Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Catherine Denueve; go watch it with the wife/girlfriend, its a chick-flick to end all chick flicks; in the meantime you can watch Denueve).
