For First Time in 87 Years, Volkswagen May Close 3 Plants in Germany

Volkswagen could shut down as many as three factories in Germany and lay off tens of thousands of workers as it seeks to regain its edge in Europe amid slumping sales and increased competition from China, the company’s top employee representative said Monday.

***snip***

The representative, Daniela Cavallo, who leads the council representing the company’s employees in Germany, told a gathering of workers at Volkswagen’s home plant in Wolfsburg that the proposed closures were part of a plan that managers had presented to the works council.

The company “wants to close at least three VW factories, downsize all remaining plants, divest itself of core areas and, on top of that, realize heavy pay cuts for the remaining employees,” she said.

Volkswagen is also considering cutting the work force at the plants in Germany that would remain open, Ms. Cavallo said, adding, “In concrete terms, this means taking out even more products, volumes, shifts and entire assembly lines far beyond to what we have already done.”

Gilligan and the Skipper really did a number on Germany when they blew up that Nordstom's pipeline...

Of course, nowhere in the article will you see "energy costs" mentioned.

That's not a factor - just like KamaLOL never slept with Willie Brown, and you better shut up with that kind of talk.

>> Of course, nowhere in the article will you see “energy costs” mentioned.

Nor will you see mentioned Volkswagen’s insane push towards EVs and their related hopping naked into bed with China. If you thought Fang-Fang pegged Swalwell good and hard...

Pity. I have a 2012 Jetta Sportwagen with 148,000 miles on it with the 2.5L 5-cylinder engine. It’s been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned.

They may have closed one, they may have closed four. Perhaps even five. But it’s been 87 years since they closed three.

The “New York Times” does not spell out small numbers like “3” in its headlines? That might be tolerable for movie posters, but not for a serious publication that is supposed to employ standard English.

How long left for Audi? Porsche still has rich customers but Audi? And their entry into F1 is not going to make workers who lose their jobs happy.

VW China was 50% of the company’s sales. Now the Chinese have allowed Western car MFGs into China to learn how to build cars, well goodbye Western Chinese business and those plants. Looks like the good student China has started the Car Invasion into Europe.

Germany is an export heavy country. No exports, no money for energy, jobs lost, going to get interesting Germany!

I’m not gloating, the USA is next unless we get our businesses and government turned around.

Like their "jernalists", their editors are also failed English majors.

I have a 2006 Gti with almost 150,000 miles. Besides some rust and necessary timing belts, brake work, and body parts, it is also most reliable car I’ve ever owned.

The key to cars like this is that they have a LINEAGE; my GTI going all the way back to WWII Kubelwagens.

The Lineage of all car makes was thrown out the window by ‘cash for clunkers’ and the push for EV’s. Thanks, Obama and GOP ‘captains of industry’!

One of the first companies to outsource work to China in the 90s was Volkswagen. It was well known because they brought Chinese worker to Germany and taught them basic German in order to train them.

So screw Fo Vay.

Economies depend on plentiful and reasonably priced energy amongst it oil, gas and electricity. Hoping to hurt or damage Russia’s economy by cutting off the gas supply apparently achieved just the opposite.

Germany’s suicidal “Energiewende,” turn toward reliance on renewable fuels, has caused the cost of energy to skyrocket. This is the reason VW can’t afford to build cars in their own country any more.

Its the EV market.
No one is buying Porsche or Audi EV’s.
Its the rapid depreciation that is killing sales.
VW owns Porsche and Audi.
