Israel’s Strike on Iran Also Hit Russian Arms Industry’s Once-Strong Image
WSJ ^ | 28-OCT-2024 | Daniel Michaels

Israel’s airstrikes early Saturday didn’t just destroy critical Iranian military infrastructure. They also battered the reputation of Russian military equipment, which has already been pummeled by poor performance during Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Iran’s Russian-made air-defense equipment stopped few if any of the missiles that Israel launched from 100 jet fighters, according to U.S. and Israeli officials. Among Iran’s losses in the strikes were its three Russian S-300 air-defense systems. Israel earlier this year hit Iran’s only other S-300.

The destruction comes atop similar strikes on S-300s by Ukrainian forces fighting Russia, plus even more embarrassing losses for Moscow. Kyiv has hit more-advanced S-400 systems, including strikes in May and in August that destroyed components or entire air-interceptor complexes.

The Russians have claimed that they can track our stealth aircraft. They failed to make good on their claim.

Thanks for the reference to "little Danny Michaels" words coming back to be revisited today.

It's nice that Speedy has surfaced again here, as he has been diligent keeping up another another thread.

Did you know there is a pro-Russia wing of the Republican Party?

Maybe he can names the names some day, while takes Paul Krugman's economic advice about the rapidly-growing national debt.

What jets did the IAF use for this attack?

The Russians have claimed that they can track our stealth aircraft. They failed to make good on their claim.

A modest civilian air traffic control radar can track an F-17 at its full range, in the clear. Military air defense radar are beefier, more powerful. I have no idea whether they can track the F-35. Stealth provides two advantages. First, air defense missiles work a short wavelengths because of the physical dimensions of the missiles. Stealth works best a short wavelengths. A relatively long wavelength ground radar might detect and track a missile, but it cannot fly. Secondly, aircraft attacking an air defense missile site (think S-300) do not attack in the clear. They are supported by standoff jammers and dispense countermeasures including chaff and small jammers that blind the radar at close range. They are preceded by small decoys that copy the radar's transmitted signal and reply with dozens or hundreds of false returns mimicking attacking aircraft and missiles.

Tracking a stealth aircraft in the clear shows a capable radar system. Tracking a stealth aircraft in the face of countermeasures shows a militarily useful radar. The Russians fail the second test.

The Iranians S-300 is 1960s technology.

The IAF has effective solutions for that system.

Iran's real defense against Israeli attacks was the threat of a massive missile barrage by Hezbollah

That problem has been largely solved as well.

Iran is now effectively defenseless and completely at Israel's mercy.

The IAF timed this attack perfectly.

They will need a bit of time to do a proper bomb damage assessment and formulate a couple follow on plans of attack.

One for a world under Trump and one for a world under Kamala

This should take them until just after the 2024 election.

One way or another, they have a lot of options and they are going to rock the mullah's casbah

I don’t know about that other poster, but to me it’s good news. It means Russia won’t be attacking NATO even after they defeat the Ukraine.

The Iranians do not have the latest Russian radar systems and, putting it bluntly, they don’t have trained Russians manning the systems. American military technology is superior to Russian technology but it is far too expensive to field enough of them to be effective and the Russians are unusually good at finding low-tech methods and tactics to neutralize them. Comparing Iranians to Russians is like comparing Saudis to Americans.

A reminder, all of the US’s weapons ( and collective West’s) shipped to Ukraine have been badly damaged/ destroyed, including our Patriots. Many reasons for that outcome, but the fact remains they have been largely defeated on the world’s largest war since WW2.

They lost this, they lost that, ….the fact remains Vlad has destroyed virtually all of Ukraines military equipment. No air power left, no AA left, military headcount depleted, …post war analysis will be eye opening.

"Iran’s Russian-made air-defense equipment stopped few if any of the missiles that Israel launched from 100 jet fighters, according to U.S. and Israeli officials. "

That should be bad for arms sales. The Russians must be furious.

Actually, US made stealth aircraft can often be tracked by radar but are made and used so that they evade a target lock. That is why antiaircraft guns and missiles usually get fired off when stealth aircraft are about, but they have little chance to connect.

In a hotly defended environment though, even stealth aircraft have to plan their missions carefully. They rely on a flight of supporting aircraft and on the cover of night and on radar and infrared jamming to stay safe.

One of the extraordinary advantages of the F-35 is that it has a suite of sensors, computer processors, and a one of a kind helmet. The visor shows pilots essential flight data and where the threats are. The display is constantly adjusted to events and the orientation of the aircraft and the pilot's head. In an F-35, the pilot can look at the floor of his aircraft and see enemy threats displayed on his visor as if the floor was not there.

Turn on a new radar and fire off a dozen AA missiles in the general direction of an F-35 and its pilot is warned automatically so as to be able to avoid any risk that they may present. Meanwhile, the F-35 or other aircraft cued to its data can launch counter measures or use missiles and bombs to take out the radar and missile sites.

Enemy aircraft can also be shot down before they even get a chance to engage. Years of computer and real world combat simulations show that against an F-35, enemy aircraft are almost always destroyed without their pilots even knowing where an attacking F-35 is or that it is even present. F-35s avoid dogfights and instead just kill their adversaries at a distance.

For all the expense, delay, and mismanagement in the F-35 program, it has delivered an extraordinary aircraft. And, as the Israelis learn about and improve on its abilities, the US quickly gets the benefit of that experience to enhance the entire fleet of F-35s.

The Iranians want the best anti-aircraft systems that Russia has to offer. Yet the Russians know that as soon as their systems are used by the Iranians, the Israelis figure out how to counter them and pass the information on to the US and NATO.

But they do. They bought updated S-300s and S-400s; these are the same systems that “protect” Moscow and Russia’s infrastructure. The S-500 system is just being introduced in Crimea.
