On a hilltop near the occupied southern Ukrainian town of Polohy, Russian forces set up an observation point that can spot Ukrainian soldiers more than 6 miles away. Four times, Ukrainian forces destroyed the Murom-M surveillance system, said Lt. Col. Oleksiy Telehin, of Ukraine’s 108th Territorial Defense brigade. Four times, the Russians promptly installed a new one.
Ukraine successfully outmaneuvered Russia’s far larger invading forces last year, despite being outmanned, outgunned and vastly overpowered in the air. With a nimble approach, superior knowledge of the terrain and the efficient use of drones and digital technology, its units were able to repel a far larger army that often seemed lumbering and mired in bureaucracy.
That’s all over. Ukraine is now attempting to dislodge an entrenched enemy, one of the most daunting operations any military can undertake. Russian troops have spent months building physical defenses that include bunkers, tank traps and minefields—some more than 15 miles deep.
In this phase of the war, Ukraine’s lack of resources is proving as much of a challenge as the dug-in Russian defenses. Despite the delivery of new Western weapons in recent months—and a promise by the U.S. Friday to send deadly cluster munitions in the future—Kyiv’s effort to push south through Russian territory toward the Sea of Azov has stalled. Though Ukrainian officials say they are making progress, and have reclaimed a handful of villages in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions over the past month, they also acknowledge the herculean nature of their task.
“If we kill a whole unit—100 soldiers—the next day they will bring another unit. And the day after, another,” Lt. Col. Telehin said.
For Russian forces, who earlier this year tried to take more Ukrainian territory, “the offensive wasn’t successful, but holding defensive positions will be easier,” said Michael O’Hanlon.

Because it is a bargain counteroffensive fed by under the counter US leadership.
Perhaps the counteroffensive needs a new counter
If possible go around the fortifications.
What does it say about Biden & his Neocon supporters, that on one hand they urge war, while on the other hand they make the Mooch Zelensky beg for weapons. Are the warmongers catching on to this insanity yet?
Because the billions of “aid” provided for Uke defense is mostly going into the pockets of politicians.
Bingo
Even if you went around the fortifications, you are still outgunned, Russia has it’s own drone force, attack helicopter and ground attack jets, combined with precision artillery and rockets.
As soon as Ukraine attempts to move armor, even if there isn’t a 15-mile deep minefield, the attack helicopters, precision artillery and ground attack aircraft pummel the advancing armor.
Without air superiority which Ukraine does not have and likely will not have, even if they were flying F-16s.
“If possible go around the fortifications.”
My first thought too, but then they hit you from behind. That’s why towns and cities are so important to secure on any offensive.
Because Linsey Graham and Mitt Romney are NOT leading the charge.
We need to send both of them there with a rifle, 1 bullet and a rusty knife.
“We have surrounded Russia with missiles and military bases, something that we would never tolerate if the Russians did that to us.”

If Ukrainians want to attack Russian positions with their new NATO vehicles, they have to use roads as fields are remoted mined.
Russia knows this and focuses artillery on the roads as the convoy approaches.
The first vehicle is struck and the other vehicles try to spill around it, into the fields.
The mines destroy these vehicles, while those staying on the road or trying to turn around then are struck by more artillery.
The problem is Ukraine 1) has no air cover 2) has no paratrooping entry 3) can’t fight only with infantry.
Anyone looking at this ahead of time would have negotiated a treaty and hoped for the best.
They won’t drive the Russians out. They don’t have the military strength. They will need us to do it for them.
Air power is important these days. If a chopper can pop up, take out your tank, and disappear…it’s going to take a while to move forward.
bkmk
It was idiotic to think the counteroffensive could achieve anything but more Ukrainian deaths.
The lies and this proxy war need to end.
There's good reasons why the use of cluster bombs are banned. They are not a legitimate wartime munitions tool, but are a delivery system for indescriminate slaughter: The killing of combatants, yes but also the murder of civilians to an extent where the term "collateral damage" can not apply.
Moreover, many of the small bomblets fall unexploded to the ground, where they can remain lethal to anyone disturbing them far into the future.
Probably because they are getting advice from American Officers.
