In the section of Wheeling in which I grew up, there was rumored to be a single Republican. We divined his political affiliation from the short sleeve white shirt and skinny black tie he wore to work each day. Even in the 1960s, no one dressed that way unless you were a Republican.
In the first presidential election in which I could vote, I supported George McGovern and ran to be elected a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. I lost. So did George, who could not even claim to be victimized by the Electoral College. Richard Nixon carried 49 states.
Later in life, I raised money for Bill Clinton and Jay Rockefeller. If you think it a bit curious that someone with my last name raised money for someone named Rockefeller, so do I. But I was a Democrat in heat.
I carried that political affiliation into my early 60s, when I became a registered Republican not for policy reasons — that would come later — but because the Democrat Party had begun to drip with condescension toward the people of West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania.
In 2008 Barack Obama said that residents of industrial towns in decline hide behind their guns and religion and blame immigrants for their plight. Really? Only a fool or a demagogue would say something like that. I began to think that this new national party cared little about Wheeling or Pittsburgh.

Trump has a legal swarm on his side. Elias, Weissman and the other lawfare gangsters will be in for a big fight if they try to win it in the courtroom with their suppression of fraud lawsuits.
