The "bed" for the lanes, were a steel grate, somewhat like a super-strong cyclone fence. Wood planks laid on that steel grate. "Blacktop" (asphalt) laid upon the wood planks.
Sometimes, you would find a "pothole" where there is no "blactop" and no wood planking . . . and you could look down upon the East River.
They’ve likely collected enough on tolls for roads and bridges in and around NYC to rebuild them all. The money was just stolen and used for other vote-getting pandering is all.
And, I really don’t wanna hear about bridges in NY needing repair with all the destroyed and washed out ones in NC.

It amazed me that there could be a full hour and a half delay between the Throggs Neck and the GWB and no one says a word about it! It was just volume. The Major Deegan they went on endlessly about.
Now that you’ve described it in more detail, yes, dead stop or slowly crawling traffic for more than an hour on the Cross Bronx Expressway heading toward Manhattan, the GWB, and finally New Jersey is a very common occurrence.
Except the Brooklyn Bridge which is why it’s still standing over a hundred years. (IMHO)

I was thinking about the same thing. This is part of the New York State Thruway. It's a TOLL road. The TOLLs at the time were some of the highest on the East Coast. Where did all the money go? Not to bridges.
Didn't they have to pass a special surcharge to inspect and repair all the bridges on the Thruway.
In true NY state form they name the new Tappan Zee Bridge after the guy who was governor when this bridge collapsed.
If I made a movie out of it no one would believe it.
NC will be finished rebuilding before NYC fixes the first bridge.

Yes I make the trip to NJ four or five times a month . Been doing it for decades. I arrive at my destination around 8.30 give or take. Last Thursday I was on schedule until I hit the cross Bronx. Backed up almost to the Tneck. No lane blockage of any kind. No accident. No radio report on the west bound GWB. Yes the cross Bronx is always backed up but it was an hour and a half slower than usual for no reason than I guess volume.
I reached my destination at 10.00. I was supposed to go again today but I said screw it. Just not in the mood.
They recently cleaned the Brooklyn Bridge. It should look better to me than the sooty version but for some reason it doesn’t. No pleasing some people…
