California police departments are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on Teslas to comply with the state’s zero-emissions mandate — only for some to find them “nearly unusable” as squad cars.
Multiple municipalities have started buying modified electric cars since Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill in 2020 ordering that all vehicles sold in California be zero-emission by 2035.
However, other departments have bought Teslas to test as regular squad vehicles — only to report a slew of concerns, including fears officers would be left charging them at unfamiliar stations while still carrying criminals, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The city of Irvine even spent a whopping $150,000 on just one tricked-out Tesla Cybertruck, drawing the ire of taxpayers because it is not for regular patrol but more to turn heads in anti-drug D.A.R.E. programs, according to LAist.

I can’t imagine a single use-case where an EV police car is practical.
I can hear it now
“Headquarters, we’re discontinuing high speed chase, our patrol car battery is dead.....please send a wrecker to tow us to a charging station”
One agency bought a Tesla Cybertruck? In person and closeup those things look like an Armored Personnel Carrier from ‘Aliens’ or the Terminator movies. They might just scare criminals to death. They’re also the ugliest vehicle I’ve ever seen.
I saw a future product offering, I think from Rivian. An onboard generator.
But but but................. Like the chevy ad we saw recently. You can wake up in the morning with a full charge and venture off to the lake. As long as it isn’t over 315 miles away. Then the next morning you can wake to a fully charged car again. Around town they’re maybe fine. Cop cars? Nope!
Half a century ago I worked at a juvenile prison. We’d occasionally have escapes. Bizarrely, escapes were considered by the admin as a good thing since it showed that the lads still had ‘problems’ to be addressed. As staff, we had to go after them.
At the time, cars wouldn’t start if you weren’t buckled up. But the system was a bit wonky. Sometimes we’d have to get into and out of the cars several times before we could get the car to start. Yet another government mandated ‘good idea’.
With the speech Governor Dipstick gave about the Oil companies and how Evil they are , it should be ILLEGAL At ALL Levels of Governmewnt to use Taxpayer Funds to purchase ANY Petroleum Product.
Like, duh man! I just completed a rare road trip to Kansas City. My informal count resulted in most cars stranded at the road side to be, wait for it, EV’s. Well, what do you know?
