Two people are dead and at least 35 others were affected after a chemical leak involving hydrogen sulfide occurred at a PEMEX facility in Deer Park, officials said on Thursday.
The extent of injuries is unknown due to officials not being able to make entry into the affected unit, officials said.
Deer Park Mayor Jerry Mouton gave reassurance to community members that there was not a chemical leak in the surrounding area, despite the smell of hydrogen sulfide seeping out into the air.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the scene remains preliminary and fluid, but noted the "situation seems contained to the scene, and no threat to the external community."
In a statement to ABC News Thursday, PEMEX Deer Park said the gas release was reported at one of its operating units at 4:40 p.m. CDT.

Incompetence or something more?
"I theenk she smell like rotten huevos, señor. No probelemo. Maybe I feex it mañana."
4:40 pm on a Friday. Wouldn’t surprise me if a hurried worker wanting to get home made a mistake. Or worse - skipped a safety step.
There’s no reason to look for anything but the most simple explanation.
Incompetence.
Let’s not go down the conspiary rabbit hole on everything :)
In 2024, incompetence isn’t a reach in too many places in the US.
That needs to change

Oh, I agree totally. I was just being a bit snarky.
I told my husband several years ago as those that “can do” leave the work force and are replaced with those who ignore standards or can’t even read the specs, warnings, or maintenance manuals, we are going to see more and more work-place accidents. Just think, our critical infrastructure is being maintained by DEI hires. In a way, it IS deliberate sabotage.
Very ugly Chemical and Death. See Page 7 of MSDS.
My thoughts too- I guess this is their next ’thing’- stopping at nothing and doing things that can’t actually fight back against directly
Is the situation still fluid—or is it a gas?
Gas. H2S gas.
Workers were in the start of a turnaround in the SRU or Sulphur recovery unit.
Opening a flange set, likely to put in blinds, which at that plant requires the workers to wear fresh air whilst performing such a task.
Something when wrong badly. More details to follow.
This plant is the plant formerly owned by shell in Deer park. Things have changed since pemex bought the place.
Of course, hizzoner the mayor refuted the reallity on the ground.
Where have we heard that recently? Just in every major jigh-crime democrat-run city in the country.
“ Deer Park Mayor Jerry Mouton gave reassurance to community members that there was not a chemical leak in the surrounding area, despite the smell of hydrogen sulfide seeping out into the air”
Oh, and H2S is added to naturally scent-free (odorless) natural gas so you can smell gas leaks before your house goes boom.
Malfeasance is just as likely as incompetence.
These days, yes looking for other causes is completely justified. The danger is attributing deliberate acts of terror and chaos to incompetence and writing them off. Then the problem will continue unabated.
Actually, gas is a fluid.
It has the same kind of fluid properties as liquid.
Sounds like the mayor of Amity in Jaws. “Shark?, What shark?”
Our education system is the world leader of of producing incompetent students.
Right. Which is why I questioned their reporting that the situation was still “fluid”.
“Incompetence or something more?”
Clearly, DEI. What else can it be?
Ah, thanks. My ignorance shows.
Methanethiol (commonly called merchantman) is the odorant in natural gas. It is a sulfur compound, but not H2S.
Methanethiol (also known as methyl mercaptan) is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula CH3SH. It is a colorless gas with a distinctive putrid smell. It is a natural substance found in the blood, brain and feces of animals (including humans), as well as in plant tissues. It also occurs naturally in certain foods, such as some nuts and cheese. It is one of the chemical compounds responsible for bad breath and the smell of flatus. Methanethiol is the simplest thiol and is sometimes abbreviated as MeSH. It is very flammable.
Me too!
