Parents say preschool teachers were giving their children sleeping aids ‘to keep them quiet’

SPRING, Texas (KHOU) - Parents of preschoolers in Texas say they are shocked after finding out their children were given sleep aids by their teachers.

They said their children told them they were given “sleepy stickers” that would make them fall asleep.

The patches in question are sleep aids containing melatonin, among other ingredients, and intended for adults.

One of the children at the school, 4-year-old Layne Luviano, broke the case open in September when she snuck one of the stickers out of the classroom.

“She kind of pulled up her little shorts and said, ‘Mom, look this is my sleeping sticker,’ and I was like, what?" Layne’s mother, Lisa Luviano, said.

The reported incident happened at Northgate Crossing Elementary School.

Layne’s parents said they weren’t informed about the sleep aids and Lisa Luviano took matters into her own hands.

She reached out to the other parents and sent them pictures of the patch to see if their kids were getting the stickers too.

Melissa Gilford, whose daughter also attends the school, said her 4-year-old immediately recognized the sticker.

Why do teachers think they can just do anything to the children under their care without any consequences? They were medicating 4 year-old children!

At this point, if you have your child in a public school, then your area subjecting your child to abuse.

Because the courts gave them that power years ago. And parents keep on thinking that it will be different for them.

Pure stupid to let children or grandchildren into the government clutches.

Isn't that nice.

'Sleeping aids,' otherwise known as 'drugs.'

There was a case a few years ago where an airline employee added a sleeping pill to a passenger's baby's bottle while heating it in the galley. I think he (the flight attendant) got in considerable trouble for having done that.

[[“If you read the ingredients … it has a lot of things I’ve never even heard of,” she said.]]

and if the kids grow into addicts, they should be able to sue the school and teachers who started them off on drugs

1: this is a bad idea, don’t do this to kids who aren’t yours

2: this is totally overblown. These patches are goofy health food store nonsense. If they work it is placebo effect. The amount of melatonin that a patch will pass into you is extremely small

School should apologize and move on. Parents can make their choice whether to keep their kids in. Doesn’t need to be a national media story.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Words don't fail me as to what I should think should happen to those "teachers".

But I know better than to put it into print.

Is “pre-school” the same as “pre-K” that democrats wanted taxpayers to pay for?

If they didn’t tax the living hell out of people maybe both parents wouldn’t have to work and use this “pre-K” as a baby sitter while they’re away which to me is what it really is.

You seem to be missing the point entirely.

You think it’s OK to medicate, or try to, medicate kids just to make your life easier?????

What’s wrong with you????

You are probably right that the amount of sleepiness that the patch might induce through the skin is minute. Calling them “sleepy stickers” is a problem, though.

It’s not just melatonin. The patches contain GABA, which is not recommended for children, and which I as a 66-year-old am not allowed to take because it plays badly with other medications I’m on.

I don’t care about the school apologizing. I want the teachers who did this to be prosecuted for poisoning children.

When the actual take home income of a double income family is calculated, as I recall, even at two full time jobs, with all the additional expenses, it generated only an additional 25% expendable income.

That could easily be made up with one parent staying home and saving babysitting money, doing homecooked meals, etc.

My parents couldn’t make it on my dad’s income alone, so my mom got a part time job and worked evenings and weekends, when he was home. They were NOT going to be leaving us to come home to an empty house.

It’s only as an adult that I came to learn and realize how little we actually had, but it sure gave me an appreciation for wise financial management.

Mr mm and I made it on his income and we struggled but there are lots of creative ways to save money and make ends meet. We managed. Except in rare circumstances, I think it’s more manageable than most people want to admit. They just don’t want to give up the extras.

I’m going to hazard a guess that most of those double income families don’t NEED to be on two incomes.

The teachers should be fired. They had no right to attached any kind of medicated patch to a student unless the parent was notified.

It deserves to be a national story so parents are reminded of the lack of quality teachers that are infesting the school system and to talk to your child every day regarding the goings on in the classroom.

Isn't there a law that prohibits teachers from dispensing non-prescribed medications of any kind to children? I thought they couldn't even dispense aspirins any longer.

I know there are laws that If children have prescribed meds that they need to take during the school day, a member of the medical profession is the one to dispense it to them.

When I started working as a Correctional Officer in 1980, we officers were the ones who were dispensing psychotropic drugs to the inmates on the count each night. There were so many inmates being prescribed these drugs, that in some cell blocks, the officers had to wheel the stuff down on a cart to dispense it all. At some point before December 1983, when I transferred out to a facility closer to home, the Union filed a complaint to stop us from dispensing prescribed medications to inmates. The complaint was based on the fact that we were not medical personnel, and shouldn't be responsible for handling, or dispensing the stuff. The Union won the grievance and the practice was stopped. From that point on, if an inmate needed his prescribed medication, he was put on daily medical callouts to the infirmary, and a nurse would dispense his meds to him. That was at Auburn Prison which was a maximum security prison with cell blocks and galleries.

When I transferred to my next prison, it was to a closed mental health facility that was being renovated to a medium security prison that had dormitory-style living quarters. That facility had general med-runs three times a day, and the inmates who needed their medications, were let off the units, and made their way over to the infirmary to have their meds dispensed to them by a nurse.

Sounds like my family. I grew up in the 1960s and my dad was a NYC cop and back then the pay was horrendous. He was constantly taking other jobs, doing construction, but mom was always home to take care of me and my brother.

One scene that stands out in my mind is the time she bought me pajamas and in about 2 days I put two holes in the knees from playing on the carpet and she took the pajamas back to the the store and tried to get a refund and the guy wouldn’t take them back and she was begging him! Literally begging putting her hands together, saying “I’m begging you” which made me realize money wasnt exactly flowing.

She’s 88 now and in the final throes of dementia so I’m taking care of her, I would rather jump off a bridge than ever ever put her in a nursing home, it’s so hard to keep it together though because I don’t know if I can handle it when she passes. She taught me everything, sacrificed everything. I was showing her old photos the other day and incredibly she remembered some of them.

Out

Take the kid out

Marry a provider and have choices for these kids. Or they’ll grow up insane
