Bringing 155mph winds and storm surges of up to 15 feet to major cities including Tampa, Orlando, and Fort Myers, experts have warned Milton is expected to be even more destructive than Hurricane Helene.

Scientists have suggested that the damage to Florida's west coast could be permanently altering after the two storms in such short notice, as Hurricane Helene hit just weeks ago.

Helene struck some of the same areas last month and killed 230 people.

As Hurricane Milton closes in on Florida, millions of people who were placed under mandatory evacuation orders are attempting to flee, causing travel mayhem and gridlock on the roads.

It is now too dangerous to fly from Tampa International Airport, which closed indefinitely at 9am on Tuesday.

in reading stories on Milton I saw this- Pamela Anderson went to some event without makeup. That takes some fortitude for anyone but especially someone for being known as a babe

@DC_Draino
·Starting to see similar patterns to Hurricane Ian

Tampa was the target in 2022 & everyone evacuated

In the final 24 hours, the storm swung south and annihilated Ft Myers

It’s starting to look like the same may be happening w/Hurricane Milton

SW FL may need to start evacuating

I highly doubt there will be a fifteen foot storm surge in Orlando.

Snell Island.
SIL lives there. Or more precisely, use to live there. In a hotel in Westly Chapel now. House, car, furniture, personal belongings, all lost in Helene. Might have a empty lot after Milton.

Yeah, lot of friends there had a bad day too.

Lots of really historic places that have been around since the 20s are going to need some serious TLC or replacement

Oh, it’ll work I think. I’ve seen a few houses with strapped down roofs in my area.

Not a bad idea to raise everything. What ppl don’t realize is a lot of the older houses have been fine during previous hurricanes. Like Wilma in 2005, etc. They have a history of surviving previous storms which is a definite selling point. The low, squat concrete block homes usually have rebar reinforced and even concrete-filled cinderblocks. After flooding they replace the wall covering (dry wall, wood paneling, etc.) up to the flood line and restore the interior. Stick houses tear the insides down to the joists and do the same.

So, the woman from ‘clown world’ photo may actually know how high the flood plain is and elevated accordingly. I like how it has marble floors indicating a known history of flooding. Most houses are built on lots which were elevated several feet before building.

Here’s hoping everything works.

“... those barrier islands off St Petersburg and Clearwater”

Were created by dredging to make the inter-coastal waterway and other navigable waterways. If they have to re-dredge after this they will. And there’ll be a line of developers waiting to slap houses.

YOLO. The time to build a home is right after the ‘storm of the century’.

They did not misspeak. The storm surge is also created by the low pressure of the hurricane. Like sucking liquid up a straw. The water outside the surge pushes down. Water inside the surge zone rises up from lower atmospheric pressure.

So, yes Orlando can have a storm surge. The water table will rise up from the lower barometric pressure. Seen it many times. The drainage ditches surrounding developments fill with ground water long before the storm hits.

All coastlines change. the one thing they do is change. Cape May had a very pronounced gap called the cove at the end of the west edge of what is now the modern town. The streets at that edge of town go from first street to second street to the cove. It recently filled in a bunch. They put a life guard stand there. I don’t think it will be forever but might be a nice addition to the beach for a while. meanwhile i’m taking my girlfriends salt urn down to the beach in two weeks. It will be our last trip to Cape May.

West Coast FL evacuees:

Take your metal detectors with you. There’ll be a lot of new opportunities once the sand on the beach is out of the way.

Shingles would be gone. Possibly, the straps would hold the rafters and top structure intact if the wind didn’t hit some kind of harmonic amplified resonance withe the exposed straps.

In that photo, Kamala Anderson is presenting herself much better than many who submit to the knife and Botox.
