The death toll from catastrophic flooding in the Asheville area of western North Carolina more than tripled on Monday to 35 — as survivors in remote mountain towns described seeing the bodies of victims stuck in trees.
Nationwide, there have been 120 fatalities from Hurricane Helene, which has cut a path of death and destruction across the Southeast since making landfall last Thursday.
The rains smashed the mountains of Buncombe County, which contains Asheville, washing away whole communities in floodwaters and mudslides. Roadways were buried or washed away, leaving victims cut off from rescue crews.
“There were bodies in trees. They were finding bodies under rubble,” said Alyssa Hudson, whose home of Black Mountain — a village of 8,400 people about 12 miles from Asheville — was all but washed away.

I had completely forgotten about that guy/gal. He used to wear mascara. Shep Smith?
I have relatives there. We've not heard from them or from other family members in Yancey and Mitchell Counties.
Yeah, Him.
He’s from the same area of Mississippi I’m from.
Before he was on FOX he used to be one of our news anchors on TV from Panama City.
Can’t believe he’s such a jerk....................
Unfortunately, on threads such as this, there are always a few posters will no soul or with personal agendas who give FReepers a bad name Sad and disgusting.
Only if the press decides to do that.
But NC is leaning Red.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
I am trying to find out the status of Mars Hill NC, about 25 miles north of Asheville. Lots of family history there, although no relatives live there anymore.
There is nothing available online that I can find. If anyone knows about how badly Mars Hill was damaged, please post.
Thanks,
CSA
I have fond memories of rafting on the French Broad river with my daughter. I bet the rapids are class 5 now.
Unfortunately it doesn’t look good in Mars Hill:
This is all I could find:
This picture appears to depict a typical junkyard you could find anywhere in the Carolina’s.
This is way worse than Katrina..................
Um.
Death toll TRIPLED.
To 35.
Public education victims can always rely on regime media for jobs, I guess.
wups, sorry.
MORE than tripled.
But still…
The Media won’t allow that to happen.
This disaster warrants a “Whole of Government” response, yet Biden is at his beach house and Harris attended a fancy fundraiser in LA last night.
Americans are dying and in peril! The federal response will absolutely be a factor in the upcoming election and to be honest, Trump should cancel his rallies and set up shop in western NC for the next week or two.
When Bush flew over NOLA during Katrina and then told that idiot he was doing a great job, it damaged his presidency which never recovered. Trump hasn’t got control of the governmental levers but he can certainly marshall private sector resources in a way no one else can.
They have to get thru all that mud as well...just so sad...
