Sept 30 (Reuters) - U.S. East and Gulf Coast port workers are set to go on strike at midnight on Monday with no talks currently scheduled to head off a stoppage threatening to halt container traffic from Maine to Texas and cost the economy as much as $5 billion a day. The labor contract between the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) union representing 45,000 port workers and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) employer group expires late Monday, with negotiations at an impasse over pay.
A port strike will go ahead starting Tuesday at 12:01 a.m. ET, the ILA said on Sunday. The USMX "refuses to address a half-century of wage subjugation," the union said in a statement on Sunday. If union members do walk off the job, it would be the first coast-wide ILA strike since 1977, affecting ports that handle about half of the nation's ocean shipping. No negotiations are taking place and none are planned before the Monday deadline, a person familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity as the matter is a sensitive one.

This is where kids find out that Santa Claus can get down a chimney but can’t get a shipping container through a port.

Expect shortages of bananas, booze, chocolate and cherries if there’s a long port strike
“Under the current contract, which expires on Monday, longshoremen earn a top rate of $39 an hour. The I.L.A. is asking for a $5-an-hour raise for each of the six years of the new contract, which would put them at $69 an hour in the final year of the contract.”
Expect your food prices to sky rocket again.
To go from $39/hr to $69/hr in 6 years is absolute insanity!!!
I would imagine coffee as well.
Good timing. The East Coast is devastated by hurricanes and these bozos decide to strike when critical supplies need to be imported.
The timing is even more shocking as they know this can’t be good for Kamala - but maybe they figure that will bring a quick settlement.
They are also fighting automation.
One of the differences between the ILA and their West Coast brethren, the ILWU, is the ILA longshoremen receive royalties based on how much tonnage they process in a year at their port. This compensation model makes it in the best interest of the ILA workers not to have cargo diverted or their bonuses will decrease. On the West Coast, longshoremen accrue additional compensation based on man-hour assessments.
probably but why? cheetos?
Hence the reason I'm not worried about it. Labor unions are Dim activists first and foremost. They won't undermine the coronated one.
Prayers hyperinflation does not make an entry.
Welllll...... at least somebody’s “reporting” on this even though it’s at the midnight hour. Friggin morons.

REPORTER: "Any comment on the strikes in Yemen, Mr. President!?"
BIDEN: "I've spoken to both sides. They gotta settle the strike. I'm supporting the collective bargaining effort. I think they'll settle the strike."

It’s not just stuff we are trying to import that we can’t get in, think of the stuff we are trying to export that can’t get out, supplies will start to back up at the port trying to get out of the country, depending on how long the strike might last if things do begin to back up, layoffs will start to happen.
This is what they want:
Four guys @ $75/hr to move each dolly from the cargo net to a truck at a walking pace.
A strike of more than 10 days and the economic disruption will be huge
I am very surprised Biden’s handlers taking a blasé attitude about it - there is no benefit anywhere for Harris anywhere in this situation.
They probably want the docks cleared so they can upgrade and install robotics like they use in Rotterdam. I’m only half kidding.
Once again the Administration is absent. They were able to avert a rail strike but Biden has no incentive to get involved now and Kamala thinks a port is a dessert wine.
Biden better get his a** in gear and stop this.
