Newt Gingrich admires Johnson for poise in dealing with Republican ‘idiots’ as speaker - Washington Examiner

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich offered kudos to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and his leadership as head of the Republican conference on Friday, admiring his patience while dealing with “idiots.”

Gingrich sparked laughter among the crowd while he spoke at the U.S. Capitol on the 30th anniversary of the “Contract with America,” a 10-point policy document he spearheaded in 1994 that is often credited with Republicans’ sweeping victories that year.

“I could never do what Mike Johnson is doing. … I can lead a charge. I am pretty good on offense. The amount of time he has to spend listening to idiots is beyond me,” Gingrich said, causing attendees to laugh.

“We were lucky because we had a large enough majority both times, 230 and 236, that you could have eight or 10 people go off the reservation and you’re still going to win,” Gingrich continued. “But you try it — when you realize there are at least 14 Republicans who wake up every morning and say, ‘I’m voting no, what’s the topic,’ it’s almost impossible.”

Johnson is currently operating with a three-seat majority, one of the smallest in House history, which causes him to rely on Democratic support to pass key legislation such as spending bills, foreign aid, and reauthorizations for things like the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the National Defense Authorization Act.

I only give to individual candidates. Haven’t given to the RNC in years.

Newt should know a fellow RINO when he sees one. Has Johnson sat on the loveseat with Nancy yet?

Gingrich has always been hostile to conservative candidates.

Under the scumbag Paul Ryan, Republicans had a large majority in the House and they still refused to work with Trump. Would not even give him funds for the wall.

What is the Newt brains excuse for Ryan?

When the rats are in charge by the tiniest majority, they are able to ram everything through or they shut it down if they have to deal with a Republican president. Either way, the Rats ALLWAYS manage to get what they want.

Why can’t Republicans (with a 3 seat majority) simply refuse to pass anything when a puppet regime is in the White House. Give the Rats nothing, the same way they do to us.

Gingrich started off great when he was a back bencher making special order speeches in the House. He went establishment after he became Speaker and, in my opinion, became exactly the beltway politician he had railed against when he first won a congressional seat. He is thoroughly D.C. establishment at this point.

so he likes Johnson does he? i despise him. to me he’s actually worse than McConnel, McCarthy or Ryan or Boehner, Cantor, etc., because he invokes our Lord to justify his actions. so i guess that makes me a ‘idiot’ to Gingrich, too. but then professional politicians calling their voters ‘idiots’ is par for the course these days. i guess i’m in the company i want to be.

Would love to know what Newt thinks about McConnell and Lindsey Graham.

Gingrich obviously thinks the rock-ribbed congressional conservatives are “ the idiot wing “.

Newt lost us the House and gave Bush a Democrat ("new tone") mandate House. Bush gladly accepted.

Newt was never in a Trump administration and thankfully never will be because Newt's mouth is a loose cannon.

Today is a perfect example.

Well….Newt is correct.

The GOP has a three seat majority. Do you want to burn bridges, go full-tilt and possibly lose the House majority? Or do you want to compromise now, not rock the boat and work to increase the GOP numbers in the House in a few months?

Newt is thinking long term. Lose the battle. Win the war. But there are idiots in the GOP that can’t see beyond next week.

Newt was what we needed in 1994 but now he has exceeded his sell by date. This isn’t you’re father’s Speaker of the House position anymore.

They could have a 20 seat advantage, and they’d surrender and lay down to keep the Left’s wishes in every single bill.

They had the House and Senate (and WH) when Trump was first elected and all they did was Investigate Trump.

Biden’s are the most corrupt family ever in the WH, but the GOP propped him
up and saw he got every little thing he wanted.

Why can’t Republicans (with a 3 seat majority) simply refuse to pass anything when a puppet regime is in the White House. Give the Rats nothing, the same way they do to us.

Because as Gaetz & Co. have themselves proven repeatedly, the House GOP caucus is not unified, and the Speaker is powerless to force members to vote how he wishes.

That includes both the Gaetz faction and the most "moderate" Republicans, and those moderates are not willing to shut down the government. So, they'll cut a deal with Democrats rather than have an extended shutdown.

That was always the flaw in the hard-line strategy of holding the Speaker hostage. Ultimately, the moderates, not the hard-line conservatives, hold the true power because they always have the option to move a little bit left rather than a lot right.

That doesn't change regardless of who we elected as Speaker - they simply can't force the moderates to vote hard-line conservatives.

It’s kabuki theatre, and the performances are on Hannity’s show, so to be sure no one will interject reality.
