Alabama used nitrogen gas Thursday to execute a man convicted of killing three people in back-to-back workplace shootings, the second time the method ... has been used in the country.

...

Alan Eugene Miller, 59, was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. local time at a south Alabama prison. Miller was convicted of killing three men — Lee Holdbrooks, Christopher Scott Yancy and Terry Jarvis — in 1999 and the state had previously attempted to execute him by lethal injection in 2022.

Happily, he suffered...

He shook and trembled on the gurney for about two minutes with his body at times pulling against the restraints. That was followed by about six minutes of periodic gulping breaths before he became still.

“Sounds complicated. “

No Carl, it’s easy and cheap.

Fer Gawds sake, this is virtue signaling. A small caliber bullet in the back of the head whilst spewing last words.

Fairly simple. Put them in an air-tight enclosure. Pump in nitrogen. They fall asleep and die within minutes.

Why a small caliber bullet? Why one? “Dont be stingy, double tap “ zombieland Rule #2.

“Just strap a mask on the guy’s face...”

That’s where the problem will come in. If the perp has a latex alergy it would be considered cruel and unusual.

In the olden days an execution would be within 40-60 days of the crime. And a hemp rope around the neck made them sweat more thinking about it.
Now it is decades, and they try to make it as stress free as possible. No more hitting the end of the rope and losing all your body functions, bladder and rectal control, at the same time.

... and he was convicted of “killed three to death”

How very internecine! (”internecine”, commonly used to mean “mutually fatal”, actually comes from a Latin word meaning “unto death” or “deadly”, as in a confrontation between two men.)

Nitrogen asphyxiation is commonly used to kill stray animals. No deadly chemicals to endanger people working in the death chamber, mortuary or funeral home. Easily administered. Relatively painless.

Respiratory distress is caused by the inability to expel carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide asphyxiation is extremely painful. A convict undergoing nitrogen asphyxiation becomes light headed before passing out, and eventually dying. It is similar to what a person experiences in a decompression event without oxygen. I have experienced rapid decompression and gradual decompression in Air Force training (as a contractor - one week course) and it was not at all unpleasant. They managed not to kill us.

Nitrogen gas.

How is it supplied? From a compressed gas tank? What purity? Is the tank itself certified? Is the tank secured according to OSHA requirements? What kind of certified pressure regulator and gas flow system is used with the tank? Is the tank in the same room as the person to be executed? Is the tank opened manually or remootely? What kind of gas mask is used on the condemned person? Is it properly fitted? Does the mask work if facial hair is present? Are there operators/witnesses/medical people present in the room during the execution? How are they protected from excess nitrogen in the room? If they are in a separated room with a window view of the execution, how is the nitrogen gas execution room ventilated out of the room before personnel are allowed back into the room? Is an oxygen meter used to verify that the room is same to enter? Are these safety issue verified prior to an execution? Where is this documented? Are there written procedures for the execution, as well as pre-and post-execution operations, systems checks, evaluations, etc.? Are there written procedures on what to do if the nitrogen gas execution appears not to be working? Do the operators of the nitrogen gas execution receive training annually or before participating in each execution?

Simple? Not so much.

Oh, please ....

You want to play that silly game then play it with the erection and operation of a gallows. And be honest when you do it. Don’t forget to include PPE for blood-borne pathogens when the condemned person’s head gets ripped off.

If it’s good enough for voluntary euthanasia it’s good enough for executions.

“ That caught my attention, too. Isn’t that redundant?”

According to the Department of Redundancy Department, it’s just fine.

Why not just administer an overdose of fentanyl? We’re told that thousands of Americans have died from those unintentionally, how hard could it be to do it on purpose?

Life imprisonment without parole would be better. The catholics are consistent on this.

No, they are not DIMSHILL.

Could you at least try to do a tiny bit of research on your propaganda?

NorthMountain @32: "You want to play that silly game then play it with the erection and operation of a gallows."

Your introducton of the erection and operation of a gallows indicates you agree that the nitrogen gas execution is not simple, but that the complexity is the same or less than hanging. Otherwise, why bring it up?!

My previous reference to the use of a rope in hanging could be done by the rope attached to a tree, a relatively simple method. A more formal hanging would add the complexity of a gallows. However there are procedures already developed for hanging, e.g., Procedure for Military Execution (Department of the Army, Washington, DC, No. 27-4, 1947). These include the length of the drop based on weight so that the head does not separate.

There are also various types of gallows, such as described here. The construction is not difficult for a professional carpenter..
