There was no immediate sign that Israel was poised to enter Lebanon and the US Pentagon said on Wednesday it did not appear "imminent".
But the IDF chief of staff's remarks were published shortly after the IDF called up two reserve brigades for "operational missions in the northern arena".
When a BBC team visited an Israeli border town on Wednesday, the army said that Hezbollah fighters must move well back from the border, to positions north of the Litani River, as demanded by a UN resolution passed in 2006.
Israel's allies, including the US, have said they are working to avoid all-out war in the region.
Several media reports on Wednesday said senior US officials were attempting to broker a short-term pause in fighting between the two sides.
French President Emmanuel Macron met with US President Joe Biden at the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss efforts to secure a ceasefire.
Shortly after the talks, France said the two countries were proposing a "temporary ceasefire" of 21 days "to allow for negotiations".
"There cannot be a war in Lebanon. This is why we urge Israel to cease this escalation in Lebanon and to Hezbollah to cease this missile launch to Israel," Mr Macron told the UN.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged an immediate ceasefire, and said "hell is breaking loose".

If Israel listens to the UN they deserve to lose their country. The only course of action is to crush Hezbollah.
They’ve got 90% of the job done with Hamas, now they’ve turned their attention northward to destroying another of Iran’s terrorist jihadist proxies.
Israel controlled small strip of Southern Lebanon for a long time.
They had local government friendly to Israel there and more-less everybody was happy. Especially the local Arabic population.
Then, in 2006, Israel did one of those “land for peace” deals and pulled out.
They lost the land and got war!
It was supposed to be some kind of “demilitarized zone” established there, but Hezbollah moved in almost immediately, terrorizing the local Arabic population and turned this strip to base for attack on Israel!
Looks like Israel is trying to go to the situation before 2006.
Looks like the primary goal is to obliterate Hezbollah as a viable force, and then go home.
Gaza is likely to be occupied for at least another year, until Israel finally hears what it needs to hear either 1) from the international 'community' or 2) the death rattles of the last of Hamas. Maybe #2 will be first in order, then #1 will be forthcoming.
Beyond wiping out Hezbollah is just speculation, but I'd guess that [redacted] and [redacted]. :^)
Agree.
My point was that the 2006 agreement was a “land for peace” agreement, the type all Democrats since at least Carter have been forcing on Israel.
It did not worked then, it will not work now or ever.
They got the land, which only helped them to do more war!
I think the only way to stop the war is the Trump way.
To agreement between all Arabic government and Israel.
Then, the terrorists will be cut out of support and wither on the wine.
Land for peace is a sound idea, provided that the land winds up in Israel’s hands and inside its borders. The so-called West Bank and eastern Jerusalem was seized by the Jordanian backstabbers in 1948 and the Hashemites booted out all Jews (not just in the seized territories, Jordan proper as well). It belongs to Israel. So does the Golan. The supposedly land grab in Lebanon was actually carried out by Syria, and was under Syrian control when Israel took over the Golan in 1967.
