Trump threatens John Deere with 200 percent tariff if it outsources manufacturing

Former President Trump threatened Illinois-based John Deere on Monday with massive tariffs on its products if it outsources some of its manufacturing to Mexico as it had previously announced, the latest indicator he would use tariffs aggressively if he wins in November.

“I just noticed behind me John Deere tractors. I know a lot about John Deere, I love the company,” Trump said at an event with farmers in Pennsylvania.

“But as you know, they’ve announced a few days ago that they’re going to move a lot of their manufacturing business to Mexico,” he continued. “I’m just notifying John Deere right now, if you do that, we’re putting a 200 percent tariff on everything you want to sell into the United States, so that if I win John Deere is going to be paying a 200 percent — they haven’t started it yet. Maybe they haven’t even made the final decision yet. But I think they have.”

Fox Business Network reported in June that John Deere, which sells tractors, crop harvesters and other large equipment, was laying off roughly 600 staff members at plants in Illinois and Iowa.

IMO, they’re two parts to this situation, one is the idea of Free Trade doesn’t work when the countries are playing by different rules, and we need to make it cheaper to operate in the USA for American Companies.

Two things that happened during the previous 4 years of Trump being POTUS was much lower energy prices and a lot few rules and regulations, fixing those two issues would go a long way to making it cheaper to operate in the USA.

I’d be willing to bet money that Mexico and China they have far few rules and regulations to drive up their cost of production, meaning tariffs have to be part of the solution of companies leaving the USA and closing down factories in this country.

John Deere has always been an American Company, if they still want to be an American Company that means employing Americans not Mexicans in Mexico.

America Last

Americans Last (under Democrats)

And that includes Democrat (in reality) George W. Bush - no more Globalist Bush-league Republicans

I was looking at a few lists of 'American made' tractors/farm equipment. The John Deere Moline, IL plant turns out combines which is probably one of the most important pieces of equipment farmers need. Their competition in the harvester market appears to be AGCO/Gleaner, based in Hesston, KS along with CaseIH/NewHolland located in PA and NE .

Other machinery made in America here and here

What is detestable about moving manufacturing to Mexico is the fentynl/meth problem - our young folk can't pass drug screens at manufacturing plants because of the influx of drugs from Mexico (in part) so we send jobs to Mexico! How crazy is that?!

DE is looking for lower labor costs on the manufacturing side of their company, that’s why they’re going to Mexico.

Another factor in this decision, they’re finding out that many Americans don’t want to work in the manufacturing sector. Others sectors of the economy have better pay, with more ecomomic security and that’s where Americans are going.

I liked the John Deere company until my wife bought me a John Deere rider mower for Father’s Day back in ‘87. It was way overpriced and had a Kawasaki engine. The engine seized after only 3 years of use with regular oil changes, well maintained. Piece of junk. Needless to say, I bought the mowers ever since.

I can’t believe how many American politicians are traitorous whores selling out this nation and her people

No wonder they hate a nationalist like President Donald Trump

Deere already lost all but some of their most ardent supporters. Their equipment is overpriced, and the high-end farm equipment now requires a subscription service to keep the electronics working in any meaningful way. Then they had their DEI BS a couple months ago. And the final nail is their right-to-repair garbage that makes part sourcing prohibitively expensive.

I own $10K worth of Deere equipment, but I won’t buy any more. I’ll hobble along what I have until I can’t repair it. I bought a Mahindra tractor, and I’m very happy with it.

It appears to me, with the us of the word “threaten”, that The Hill does not like American workers. As in, “How dare the riff-raff complain about losing their jobs!”

Another problem for Deere, will be all the people that’ll be selling farmland over the next two decades.

People that have zero interest in farming, but would like to collect on their inheritance.

I gather that you could say Trump just sent this company a John Dear letter.

“John Deere has always been an American Company..”

Indeed, part of the fabric of Americana. However, there is “woke” leadership there now.

True. Their gangster governments have infinitely more common sense than our current gangster democrat filth.

That’s why a 200% tariff on their tractors if they move production to Mexico needs to be a serious threat instead of idle talk, same goes for any company engaged in this type of business practice.

I would hate to be a John Deere dealer. Many farm equipment dealers are multi-generational enterprises. Even before the reaction to moving jobs out of the U.S. and the DEI disaster, lower quality and the inability of owners to repair their equipment tarnished the John Deere name. It took longer than it did to wreck Disney but the leftist management of John Deere has sabotaged over a century of good will.
