Ouch: It seems Kamala Harris is so afraid of having to be spontaneous in public that’s she’s skipping this year’s Al Smith dinner on Oct. 17.
A charity event that raises millions for the city’s unfortunate, the dinner has hosted the major-party rivals every four years (with just two exceptions) since 1960, when Richard Nixon dared to join John Kennedy, the first Catholic presidential nominee since Al Smith himself, on Catholic “turf.”
The candidates are supposed to deliver light jabs at each other in their dueling addresses, which plainly can be written in advance — but the program apparently has too many risks of being called upon for spontaneous reactions for Harris to agree.
The Democratic nominee has done vastly fewer non-Teleprompter events than any past major-party candidate; one of her allies claims Harris is just too busy — though that’s never stopped a sitting president from attending.
Kamala says she will do the Smith dinner in the future — if she wins in November. (Is that a carrot or a stick?)
As for those exceptions: One came in 1996, when the then-cardinal opted to invite neither nominee, presumably because President Bill Clinton had vetoed a bill that banned “abortions” of babies already partly out of the mother.
That could be Harris’ concern now, since she and running-mate Tim Walz support unlimited abortion rights all the way through the ninth month of pregnancy. (Walz even signed a bill ensuring that babies born despite an attempted abortion would have no protections.)

The Al Smith Dinner seems tailor made for someone like
Kamala. All she has to do is tell one or two very lame ‘jokes’, then cackle about each one for about eight minutes each. Cackle until the band starts playing an intro of the next speaker, then act surprised and offended when they turn your Mike fully off. You know the script, Kamala.
If she won’t do this how will she ever get a head...
Actually, I thought the reason Kammy doesn’t want to be at that dinner is because the founder and supporters of the dinner are (gasp!) Catholic, and at best, ambiguous on abortion issues.
She’s a coward. And low IQ.

I heard that in her early VP days she was seized with such anxiety because she had to attend some dinner that her staff did a kind of dress reheasal so she would be more confident.
She’s not funny and would embarrass herself.

I haven’t checked Trump’s schedule, but I’m pretty sure Orange Man will be there.
Surprised to learn that, given that she got her start in the San Francisco party circuit rubbing shoulders with the glitterati at black tie gala dinners.
It appears Harris really can't handle herself where it can't be scripted entirely. S simply can’ think on her feet. So if she cant do this AI Dinner how the heck will she ever do a state dinner!
Maybe no one at the SF dinners were expecting any gravitas from her.

Can’t hardly believe our country is letting all this happen without much resistence at all. Harris should have never been ‘slid’ into Joe’s position.....and she’s sure not being operating as the VP.....
