Investors on Wednesday appeared to reassess the risks that Kamala Harris could win the presidential contest, sending the major stock indexes plunging on the morning after the debate between Harris and Donald Trump.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than 550 points, or 1.4 percent. The S&P 500 declined by 1.1 percent and the Nasdaq Composite was off by 0.70 percent.
Harris has said she would seek to hike a broad range of taxes, including taxes on corporate profits, unrealized capital gains, and the incomes of wealthier Americans. Many investors and Wall Street analysts think these taxes would weigh heavily on stocks.

In the real world people still have to buy gas and groceries. Every day people are reminded that the Harris Administration has failed them.
America has too many “SLOW” voters who believe their single digit I.Q.s know what is best for America. Not So Swift Swifty Tater Tots.
Does this mean a lot of people thought Trump lost the debate?
I didn’t watch it. Despite the gang-up on him, wasn’t he on his game?
The debate might not have been the only driver.
A top story on Zero Hedge was about inflation still not being tamed:
It seems like Marxism always tanks markets!
No, most polls I’ve seen show people think Trump won the debate, especially the important undecided voters. Trump handled it very well. I doubt these market changes have anything to do with the debate, nor do I think they seriously think Kamala has a real chance of winning.
Core Month over Month Inflation was expected to be .2%, but actually came in at .3%.
This is the primary down driver of the markets today, as the expected upcoming rate cut may or may not happen due to this “miss”, but that still remains to be seen.
Does Kamala really want to be known as the “Masterdebater”?
Well, she’s not a cunning linguist.
1) Create poor people by bad policy
2) Scream Tax the Rich! because of 1)
3) Keep the money for you and your buddies when the taxes get imposed
The debate probably had nothing to do with this. The higher core inflation reading means a Fed rate cut in the near future may be in jeopardy.
Shocking New Survey Exposes Reality That Only 23% Of Independents Think The Economy Is On The Right Track. Millions of Americans will be basing their votes on how they currently feel about the economy and who they trust to handle it moving forward...
Amen and please check my tagline.
Agreed.
Even more, Powell has to be careful not to send the signal the economy is tanking (whether it really is or not) so as to avoid a market crash.
The Fed doesn’t care if the stock market declines, just as long as it is orderly and gradual. At these levels a sizeable correction would be healthy anyway.
Therefore 50bp is off the table I bet.
Just the mere thought or idea of an “unrealized capital gains tax” should be enough to scare the living daylights out of anybody that has any kind of asset whether it be stocks, bonds, property, precious metal, business, farm etc.
It will give the communists the legal right to bankrupt whomever they want to bankrupt. It is a hideous, evil tax regardless if one is rich or poor.
“Trump handled it very well.”
I’m a strong Trump supporter and have sent him big donations this cycle. But I could not disagree with you more. What I’m going to write is going to make lots of FReepers angry, but, frankly, he was terrible (up until his two minute closing).
He rambled, wasn’t focused, he digressed from his digressions which led to more digressions, and he wasn’t prepared. He turned the immigration question into “eating cats” — probably 99% of Americans haven’t heard of that Springfield, OH episode. It made him look foolish. That was a juicy one for Trump and he handled it poorly.
He throws out numbers without any context. He didn’t focus on her horrible record in California or the Senate. He totally blew the race question — it is NOT about race, it’s about her opportunism exploiting race, first using being an Indian then rotating to being black and pandering. He could have blasted that wide open instead he said “I don’t care about her race.” which made him look like he didn’t want to answer the question.
His handling of J6 was at best so-so only because he brought up Ashley Babbit.
He didn’t bring up the assassination attempt.
He didn’t explain the Democrat-created lawfare very well. Her labeling him a criminal was far more effective than his approach.
Yes, it was a three-on-one slugfest, but he really blew it. President Harris is almost assured.
Nothing that nitwit said had anything to do with why my little blue plastic bag at the grocery store now carries $100 worth of groceries. All her nasty remarks to Trump all the little catches, has nothing to do with the real world. This woman and her elk are going to get trounced in November
So is Breitbart saying President Trump lost the debate??
You are wrong, of course, but you’re especially wrong about the Springfield comment. It’s very important he gets that issue out there, and I like the way he said it.
